I apologize in advance as I know this is probably been answered 1 million times but I see so many different variations of the answer that I was hoping to just get a quick simple rundown. I am aware that you can wear a fanny pack with three prongs on pretty much every ride except for maybe two correct? I asked recently about neck fans and was told that I would have to remove those on any of the rides. If I took a small book bag would I have to remove that for every single ride? Or are there only certain rides that you cannot take items with you unless it’s the Fannypack? I really want to just wear a fanny pack but I am concerned that I won’t be able to fit everything that we need to take because it will be so hot inside it, but I also don’t want to be going to a locker between every single Ride. It seems strange to me that it Disney you can pretty much carry any bag on any ride but it universal they are so much more strict about it! Thanks!!

I think the main point you're missing is that there are three categories related to what is permitted on when it comes to attractions:

1 - There are attractions where any bag type is permitted, which would include fanny packs, backpacks, shoulder bags, etc. Neck fans would likely be permitted to stay on you for these rides as well. Off the top of my head, this includes rides like the Simpsons, Spiderman, Transformers, Hogwarts Express, Seuss rides, Jurassic Park, etc.

2 - There are attractions that have free locker banks adjacent to them where they limit what is permitted on the ride. These are rides with more robust safety restraints and are a little higher intensity, so they limit what can be carried on so that nothing becomes a projectile, nothing gets lost, and so that nothing interferes with safety restraints. On these rides, most TMs will permit fanny packs with three prong clasps on the ride without having to store it in a locker. As with anything, its all up to TM discretion so I would not say its 100% permitted all the time but as a general rule of thumb, this is what seems to be allowable. You can also put any items in your pockets that will fit. Anything that doesn't fit in your pockets or fanny pack would have to be stored outside the ride in a free locker (i.e. neck fan). This includes rides like Forbidden Journey, Gringott's, Mummy, Men in Black, etc.

3 - There are currently two attractions (Hulk and Rip Ride Rockit) that have metal detectors at the queue entrances. These rides do not permit *anything* on your person except for a lanyard. All bags and loose articles, including fanny packs, fans, cell phones, etc., have to be stored in the free adjacent lockers. I assume Velocicoaster when it opens may require the same, but I think that is still TBD.

I believe most if not all of the lockers at this point use your ticket to scan and unlock your locker, so you'll want to keep that on you in some fashion. This is why so many choose to wear lanyards. Its also worth nothing that most (all?) of the free lockers are quite small, so a backpack likely would not fit in them unless you have a drawstring style that is half empty and can be squished down. There are larger lockers for cost at the front of the park that you can rent for a day or half day. If you think you need something larger than a fanny pack or crossbody style purse to carry everything, I'd suggest renting a locker at the front of the park for the day - I think its something like $10 for the day? You could even bring a fanny pack in addition to that if you want to keep something on you too while walking around.

Thank you SO much for this. This is exactly what I needed. I am very torn and typically do no carry much in the parks, but with the heat and stupid masks it's a different story. Since I now know it's not every ride we could handle putting our things in lockers when needed, like the neck fans. I can probably shove everything else we need in my fanny pack and we'll def use lanyards!

Good call. I try to wear a fanny pack now but when I can't, I carry my larger crossbody bag that still fits in the locker. IMO, its not worth the hassle to go without in order to avoid using the lockers because the lockers aren't at every ride and they don't add much time or effort to the overall ride experience. It adds maybe 5 minutes to the start and end of the ride. Worst case scenario, the larger lockers at the front are always available and are self serve. We sometimes rent those too if we buy things at City Walk and don't want to carry them around.

Not every ride, we just took our soda cup on jimmy fallon, lol.

Take a small bag in addition to the fanny pack, or just be prepared to pay the $2 for a larger locker when needed.
See the locker sizes on YouTube.

If you really need/ want some "just in case" stuff bring it all and rent a big locker at the front of the park. You won't be stuck lugging it around so you can be very minimal around the park but you'll have access to it if you need/ want it.
"Large lockers measuring 12” x 13” x 16.9” are available to rent near the park entrances of Universal Studios Florida™ and Universal’s Islands of Adventure™ starting at $10 per day. Family-size lockers measuring 12” x 16.25” x 16.9” are available at Universal Studios only, starting at $15 per day." https://www.universalorlando.com/web/en/us/plan-your-visit/hours-information/theme-park-services
