Southwest MADE money in the second quarter.

After LOSING money for the 3 previous quarters. And the last quarter they were profitable, they made 44 cents per share vs. the 7 cents/share just reported for Q2.

And they are not predicting a Q3 profit, given the weak travel demand they currently see.

Hard to characterize SW as a real "money maker" right now... not that any of the other airlines are either.
 
Yes, but it would be cheaper to fly them empty than to fill them with unpaid weight. It does costs XXX number of dollars per pound in fuel to fill these seats with non-paying or very low paying occupants. That being said, I certainly wouldn't refuse a free or very low cost seat.

Remember, "perks" are part of an employees total compensation package and can be seen as a great way to increase employee retention despite strong economic headwinds.

Did I mention that Southwest has some of the lowest load factors in the industry currently?

For the record, I am not picking on Southwest; but they are in the same boat as the rest of them now.
 

Not all non-rev travel is stand-by... but the vast majority is.

98% of free flying is on non-revenue space. Non-rev passengers are not guaranteed a seat until right before the flight takes off and there are empty seats. They are taking up seats that were otherwise not sold.

Yes, but it should be limited more than it is. At disney you only get so many free passes for friends and family. I know someone married to a flight attendant and he flies for free at least 2 to 3 times a month, he goes to NY and Florida almost every weekend because they can. He has never had to wait for a flight either, he has never been bumped since he started dating her and back when they were dating he was flying free too and in first class.

I am not sure if all airlines are like this or just the one she works for, but it needs to be limited to 2 or 3 a year in my opinion.
 
It all depends on the load factors. If the seat are available, employees and family can fly. If you knew how little some FA's and CSR's make, you wouldn't feel so inclined to limit their flight privileges.

I still don't see an issue. Considering how little FAs (and most airline staff) make normally and how much they have given up in terms of salaries in the past 10 years, the actual cost to the company is VERY small.
