bag checks

I was at Disneyland over the holiday weekend, very busy, and wanted to enter Disneyland. I had no bags but I was told I had to wait in the line for 30 minutes anyway. Does anyone know if there is a way around this?

To the best of my knowledge, no. Everybody has to go thru the security check.

Everyone has to go through the security tents. I rarely have a bag, but I still wait in line to pass through. But I have never waited 30 minutes for the security line! :scared1: And I was there this past NYE, one of the busiest days of the year. I think the longest I have waited would be 10 minutes, but again this was during NYE.

I do think they should have a security line for people with no bags or strollers, etc. but I am guessing that policing that line would be more hassle than it is worth. So I just try to pick the shortest line.

ArchOwl, that would be a good idea! Similar to how the airports have the separate lines for families and "expert travelers", they could have lines for those with strollers, those without bags, etc. Like you said, it would probably be a pain to police, but it's definitely suggestion-box-worthy!!

i agree wholeheartedly...they do it at wdw so they should get with the program...they want to "up" the prices for us so they should "up" something as simple as this:rolleyes:

Wow that's long wait. What time was it when you went through? We are in DL now and have gone back and forth a couple times and the only time it has taken me more than a minute or two to get through was this morning when we waited in line for the security gates to open for MM. And then anyone without a bag walked right through with only a visual inspection as they passed.

WDW has separate lines for those without bags. There is a security CM watching for people with bags trying to sneak through. Why can't DLR do this?

I've never had to wait more than a few minutes even during busy times either. A 30 minute wait would be unheard of ... did something happen to stall the line? Or were all the lines like that? I could imagine it first thing in the morning if people are waiting for the parks to open, but then again I'm never awake that early so I can't verify :)

As an aside ... the protocol for those lines always have me scratching my head. The security folks always take a while to thoroughly check out my kid's wheelchair storage area plus my wife's purse ... but since I never carry a bag into the park, they just let me walk right through, loose shorts or baggy jeans with hoodie and all. I'm a really skinny guy, and not that I would do it, but honestly, I could be carrying anything on my person in my baggy clothes, and all that gets checked are bags and purses? Something doesn't quite line up there, at least from a security standpoint :confused3 It would make more sense if they had metal detectors or pat-downs and other measures afterward, but just a quick scan of bags seems like sort of a, in-between no-man's land ... enough hassle for some people, but not enough oversight for others. I'm not advocating that everyone goes through a thorough security screening that holds things up, but the cynical side of me really thinks these aren't so much "security checks" as opposed to "bringing your own food checks". See how quickly cynicism sneaks up once you leave DLR? Just got back late last night and I'm already looking at things through suspicious instead of whimsical glasses :) Me thinks it's time for another trip!

Haha, my thoughts exactly! And I've never really understood the security checks, where some will just look in your bags while others will make sure to look into each pocket. It's really... inconsistent. Like when I was there last week I never had a problem with any of the bag checkers until we were getting onto the monorail from DTD, and she physically pulled out my emergency inhaler and was like "WHAT IS THISSS? HUMM?" Both my boyfriend and I were like "It's an inhaler??" And she just kinda threw it back in my bag. I guess my point is that I think there should be a different system in place for the current security checks.
But yeah, we never had to wait anymore than 5 minutes for any line in the bag checks, even at the busiest times of the day.

They've always had a seperate line for those without bags when we've been there. I'm not sure why is was so bad that day? Maybe they had a security concern?

My son carries his medical supplies with him (syringes, glucose tabs, insulin, glucose meter, etc...) They never question anything except his glucose meter and he always has to open the case so they can see what is in it. LOL!!

I have never seen a dedicated "no bags" line at DL only at WDW. We go at least once a week.

This is the one instance where I believe WDW has it over DLR. When we went in February all I had with me was my camera bag and they let me through the "no bags" line with it as it's tiny and can really only hold a camera. At DLR I always stand in line for a while waiting to get in regardless of whether I have a bag or not. I think it would be much smoother and faster for everyone if they had one line for those without bags as at WDW.

I agree with some of the security people being crazy! My mom has arthritis and she brought in her pill case in so she could take them with food, the lady made us open each thing show her each pill then explain to her why my mother takes them!!!!! That was alittle much. Other then that never had a problem and never had to wait longer then a min or 2.

Isn't that infringing on the HEPA Law? Just like when you get a guest assistance card they aren't supposed to ask what your condition is just what your concerns are. Some of the security personnel don't really know their boundaries, I think that might be the problem. But all in all, even with everyone having to go through the bag check line it goes pretty smooth but they do need a dedicated "no bag" line. :) They also need an annual pass holder line. :) Just sayin. :rolleyes1

No offense, it is HIPPA and has nothing to do with what they can or can not ask, Disney could put TSA type security into the parks if they wish but it is not a way that Disney wishes to approach going to Disneyland.

Example, I carry a firearm every day and it is habit that I put it on when I get up, I have been in the parks numerous times without thinking about it being there, did they catch that, NO..security really is a misnomer for bag checks for food, glassware, etc...sorry.

I would be nice to have a no bag line, but it will still get abused just like the 10 items or less checkouts at the store.

Yep you are right!! No offense taken. I'm ok with being wrong. :) So they are looking for food and sorts? We take snacks and stuff in all the time and they have never said anything.

I think the no bags line works well at WDW. If the CM sees you walking in with a bag the direct you to the lines. It isn't really a line just a way to bypass the bag check line.

Actually it's HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and it is violation to ask what condition you take medication for. I've been HIPAA certified for years, and that's not a question you are permitted to ask unless you are HIPAA certified AND have an actual need to know. I can't imagine that Disney security guards are given HIPAA certifications in order to ask medically intrusive questions at the gate. Well okay, they're allowed to ask it, but the person asked has the right to tell them to take a flying leap and cannot be denied entry because they have refused to answer a medically intrusive question.

Actually HIPPA applies to what information providers can release and how they release it. Trust me I helped consult on the act.

From the HIPPA website;

http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/understanding/coveredentities/index.html

The Privacy and Security Rules apply only to covered entities. Individuals, organizations, and agencies that meet the definition of a covered entity under HIPAA must comply with the Rules' requirements to protect the privacy and security of health information and must provide individuals with certain rights with respect to their health information. If an entity is not a covered entity, it does not have to comply with the Privacy Rule or the Security Rule

A Covered Entity is one of the following
A Health Care Provider
A Health Plan
A Health Care Clearinghouse

So Disney can ask anything they want, they are not a covered enity, and they are in no way breaking the law. I find myself frequently sending people who are supposed to know the law inside out to the the HIPPA website. Medical people and "compliance officers" are the worst offenders.

HIPPA only covers what your physician, or healthcare provider/insurance can release without your permission.

I have to agree with Jack, security checks are not really security checks. We had no trouble entering with firearms, but was questioned about a bag of granola. :rotfl2:
