Bad water?

A friend of ours returned from Disney and drank some tap water and got violently ill at Epcot. She just had a bag at least but couldn't make it to the bathroom. She only drank a few sips...

Has anyone else had an issue or gotten sick from the water?

I've never gotten sick but I hate the taste of the water. I usually only drink bottled.

I'm going to take a stab here and assume it wasn't truly the water that made her sick. The water is safe for all to drink. We've never had a problem w/ it. Some guests don't like the taste. I've never tasted anything different about it.

I don't think you could get violently ill from the water, but it doesn't taste good at all. The best thing you can do is to ask for a ice water from eateries and put it in a water purifier bottle, and this way you get rid of all the things that make it taste so bad. I am going to get at least one for my girlfriend and I, this way we save on buying drinks, and we don't have a nasty aftertaste in our mouths.

The only way you could get instantly, violently ill from "a few sips" of anything is if you were allergic to it or if it was Draino, so I doubt that it was the water that made your friend sick.

But, as the others have said, the water at WDW has an unpleasant taste (to me it tastes very metalic). I have a Brita Fill and Go bottle that filters out the metalic taste, and others drink bottled water.

The taste is also much less noticable if the water is very cold, so in a restaurant where you get water with lots of ice the taste is not so bad.

If the reaction was immediate, then folks are right that it wasn't the water that made her sick. However.... 1- the water at WDW makes my stomach feel upset. I always figured it was heavily chlorinated/treated, but my Brita Fill-N-Go solves that problem. 2 - I have, twice in my life, already had a stomach bug and had a drink of water "tip the balance" from uncomfortable to physically ill. I don't think it was the water per se, just that my stomach couldn't handle anything at that precise moment.

is pretty gross. We drank the water in Epcot on Saturday Mar. 19. My freind wouldn't drink more than the first sip. I drank a glass. I was fine.
I think it could have been a mind over matter thing. The person who got sick, may have made herself sick by believing the water was bad. Afterall, it does taste funny, and overthinking it could make you sick!

If the water in Epcot was that bad it would be declared so by the health department by now and would be all over the news.

It was mot likey a flu and the taste of the water was the final straw!

We use the Brita Fill-N-Go's and have no problem then with the chalky tasting water.

Although I truly feel bad when anyone gets sick, I always have to laugh when people say they know what did it. Pretty impossible to tell. The only way I'm aware you can tell for sure is if others who had the same food or drink are also ill. A basic knowledge of chemistry and/or physics will tell you that there's no way to have only one "dose" of a bug in the water supply, that is, for only one person to get sick from a public water supply -- the bug would diffuse to such an extent that it wouldn't harm anyone, or it would be so prevalent that many, many people would be affected, and that's the kind of stuff that makes the TV news and big headlines.

You can know it's food poisoning if, for example, you went out to dinner with 6 other people, you and 4 others are violently ill :sad2:  :crazy2:  the next day, and all the sick people had, say, marinara sauce and NONE of the well people had marinara sauce.

People express uninformed opinions based on nothing but ignorance all the time. For example, I haven't been to WDW in 12 years and I think FastPass and PSs are a waste of time because it's enjoyable to wait in line for hours and be hungry. :rotfl2:

It tastes a little funny, but never made me sick. and I'm too cheap to pay $2 for a bottle, so I drink it from the water fountains.

I had the same type of thing that happened with iced tea once. I got it from a place in the mall and I didn't put enough sugar in it. My stomach started to hurt and I thought it was because of that. I ended up getting really sick that night. I had the flu, and was so sick for days. But because of the tea and then getting sick I couldn't drink tea without making sure there was lots of sweetener in it for years.

This is so weird that it was just mentioned! My classes are reviewing parasites right now! ;) J/K btw, this is not parasites.

Anyways, it may or may not have been the water. Truthfully, depending upon what region of the country that you are brought up in, what lifestyle you have lived (poor housing or housing with nothing but purified water), how you live (did you tromp around in creeks and drink creek water like I did or did you listen to your parents to not do naughty things like that), and depending upon your genetics, everyone reacts differently when exposed to different bacterias and substances commonly found in water.

I'll put it simply. I've heard of quite a few people having bad reactions from the water at Disney. Have I ever had a bad reaction? Not at all, I drink water like a fish and am always fine. Is it epidemic there? No. Chances are though that there are certain things (I won't get all technical on everyone) in the water that most people in the U.S. have been exposed to before, but a few have not. If you've never been exposed to these "things" you'll react like your friend did.

A perfect example is the warning to not drink water in foreign countries. My sister, who never tromped around in creeks or drank things like lake water, reacts very violently when she so much as drinks tap water from the hotel faucets in the Caribbean, and they often have their own purification systems. I've drank water at the same hotels with her out of the tap and have been completely fine. I've even drank water at peoples homes basically in the underdeveloped sections of Dominican Republic (a friends family is originally from there, thus how I've been to these different areas) and have been fine. Of course most people thought I was nuts to even try unpurified water but I've learned that I've already exposed myself to just about everything in terms of things that will be found in water. Would most people react that way? Definitely not. Do most people get the flu as often as I do though? Definitely not! lol

So basically, if your a person who puts a filter on your tap 24/7, and has never drank water outside of your home (and truly you shouldn't, if you've ever done an analysis of water there is actually a rather evil cocci parasite (I shortened the name of it) that is in 70% of surface waters in the U.S. and causes severe diarrhea in many) than chances are your more likely to have a bad reaction to tap water anywhere where large numbers of people congregate.

Just pay attention to yourself and if you tend to have abdominal pain and stomach problems often (you know what I mean) then chances are you should probably avoid the tap water while on vacation. So if you have a fincky stomach and react like that even in U.S. Hotels (if your from the U.S.) simply drink bottled water. I've heard of people trying to build themselves up to the point where they are used to foreign water while on vacation and find that hilarious. A week long vacation, even if you drank the stuff every day, is not a long enough exposure time to get yourself used to it. All you'd wind up was an incredibly sick you.

I wouldn't imagine that many people have this problem at Disney though. All the major things are already filtered out.

Heres a parting fun fact for you all. About 20% of the United States carries intestinal parasites and don't know it. Thats the percentage that is unaware of it. :rotfl2: Fun times folks! If you have abdominal pains all the time that could be why! But don't worry, if you have the little buggers living inside of you and they've been there for awhile you'll continue to be fine, you'll just have the occassional mild stomache.

Thank you Dawgpoundaj - That was pretty informative. You broke down into easy terms alot of what my doctors told me.

I get sick from the water in FL all the time. I am really prone to Travelers Tummy, tho & get sick from the water most places. Probably because I have an impaired immune system & my body just doesn't know how to deal with the minor differences in flora & fauna in the water. Yes, this has been confirmed by my doctors.

But, even tho I am prone to be very sensitive to tap water (we have water purifying filters in our house because of this) it is not an immediate reaction such as the OP described. It actually takes a day or so for all the stuff to build up & cause the reaction.

So, some people can be sensitive to changes in water. If you are one of those people, drink bottled water where ever you travel, including WDW.

I was sick when we went to Florida in 2003 and I think it was the water. Not an immediate reaction- but the 3rd day I believe. This trip I am only drinking bottled water and soda!

Yep, I'm one of those stream stomping folks...even drank it on occasion!!! So, I have never had an issue with the Disney water. I don't even mind the taste. And we have one of the big Brita filter jug things at home in the fridge. I very seldom drink our tap water at home, but I drink from the fountains (bubblers) at WDW..go figure. No one in my family has ever had a problem with the water. We go during the summer, so drink often from the fountains...probably every hour or so. But, perhaps people, if they think they might have a problem with the WDW water, should start with very small amounts at first and then build up the amounts over the first few days.

This happened to me once before when I had the beginning stages of heat stroke. I had been working out in the sun for a few hours and when I tried to drink some water, I started throwing up. It came on real fast, one minute I was feeling fine, and the next moment I couldn't even walk a few steps without puking. Maybe your friend had too much sun, and not keeping hydrated???

water in different places does have different minerals and ions and what not in it. Therefore someone could technically be allergic to one of these things which isnt in their water at home, but is in disney/orlando tap water.

a friend of mine is very allergic to flourine and a lot of places but flourine in tap water. therefore she cant drink it.

This thread is really reminding me of another recent thread about cleanliness, where someone said they had seen many people "washing" themselves or their babies in the drinking fountians. For that reason alone i would never drink from a fountian, you never know what may have been left behind on that spout!

The water is yukky to say the least. I don't know why it tastes like that. TOtally dif taste from maryland Water.

Also, has anyone noticed the weird taste in the Sprite and Coke through the fountains NOT bottles. It has that icky water aftertaste in it.
