I bought raw country pork ribs from Costco on Sat. DH opened the package to marinade it yesterday evening, and it smelled a bit off. I have many tummy issues, so we tossed it. Just wondering if Costco will refund from the receipt, or if they needed the product. The sell by date on the pkg was still a day away, and the groceries went straight from the store into the fridge. Was thinking of pulling the wrap off the pkg to bring back with me over the weekend, but figured it will stink to high heaven by then, so it went out. It was about 11.50.

They should. I would call them in the morning and explain. I am sure they will tell you to come to the desk with the receipt and they will take care of it. They are good about things like that.

if that package had been picked up for purchase and then the dumped on some shelf somewhere in the store if the purchasee changed their minds. How often do you see that happen to perishable items in grocery stores? It sits in a room temp area for who knows how long and then someone with good intentions returns it to the cold case. It is scary. I cringe at the lack of common sense and laziness.

I think you'd better run out and fetch it before the trashman comes. You'll need to resubmit it to the store to get your refund.

In my local Sam's Club (store similar to Costco) the slabs of meat are often piled so high in the coolers that they are exposed to room temperature air. The cellophane covering has almost zero R-value insulating qualities. This does them no good.

Yeah, I wouldn't have thrown it out... CostCo has a liberal return policy, but you'd probably have to at least bring the pork in as "evidence". If you still have the pork I would wrap it in something and take it back in. Or maybe call them?

We had a similar meat issue but with Sam's just a couple of weeks ago. Bought a family size pack of ground beef, put it in the fridge overnight intending to split it and freeze some the next day. In the morning, the whole package of meat was completely gray. :crazy2: We opened it to check the center of the meat and it was turning gray too. We flipped the package over and noticed that the plastic wrap had not been completely sealed on the underside of the meat tray--there was a hole in the wrap about the size of a golf ball.

Anyway, we took our receipt in to the store (without the meat in hand) and explained what happened to the guy in the meat dept. and asked him if we could still use the meat...he said he didn't think we should and told us to throw it out. They replaced the meat with a new package at no charge. The upshot of the whole thing is that now we check the undersides of our meat packages very carefully to be sure that they are sealed properly.

I used to work at Costco in refunds and we used to take it back without the meat-just bring the receipt and if you can the sticker from the pack with the bar code on it.We really didn't want stinky meat!!They have a 100% satisfaction policy.

I think you should take the sticker in at least. What if this meat needs to be recalled because it's tainted? They can track it if they get the sticker/bar code back. :)

You don't need your receipt or the meat. Costco can reproduce yourt receipt at the service desk.

You do not need the package or the receipt for costco returns. They can look up all of your purchases in the computer.

I have gotten a few bad produce items from Costco over the years. The latest being a rotten watermelon. I did not bring the watermelon back to the store with me. I went to the service desk and explained the situation they gave me a refund without a problem. Costco rocks!

Absolutely, Costco will refund your money. Just bring back the receipt and that's it. If you don't have the receipt, tell them what you bought on what date and they will look it up.

I brought back bad Salmon once and they asked me not to ever bring back bad food! They have to dispose of it. They said just throw it out and bring back the receipt. So that's what I did a few months ago when I had bad pork roast.

Luckily, I don't bring back things too often to Costco. I think I've returned less than 10 things since I've become a member (1996).

Just a friendly note.... I work at Costco.... and while I do not know the safety procedures at Sam's, at Costo they have VERY strict food handling rules. I have been in the grocery industry for close to 20 years, and never have I seen this level of food safety. Accidents do happen, but I do not think you will ever see this happen at a Costco. We check temps every hour on every cooler in the store... and yes, Costco will give you a refund... they are GREAT about that!:goodvibes
