BAD EXPERIENCE - Stay Past check out time at SSR?

Are we the only ones who bring our own luggage down to the lobby?

I see plenty of people handling their own luggage.

We take our luggage down ourselves. We've always flown SWA and they don't allow us to check our bags for the return flight at the resort (like most other carriers - not sure why that is?). We've always left everything with bell services until ME picks us up. We're always out by 10:45am and find stuff to do until it's time to go. :sad1:

Your friend MAY have been told yes upon check-in but the person telling her could be a trainee and really don't know. Everyone I've dealt with on my one and only visit was a trainee. They could not even give me the correct direction to the boat to Downtown Disney. Haven't you been told something by someone that turns out to be wrong. If she was told no the second time she should have done what someone else stated. Vacate the room and have bell service take her luggage.

In regards to not having a full resort the resort only puts a certain percentage of rooms in service during non busy times.

Personally I think she got off lucky. I think many of us would have charged her more.

Hope she has learned a lesson.

Every single time I've checked in, the CM has circled the check-out time on the paperwork and reminded me that check-out time is 11:00. We usually check out much earlier (try to catch an EMH the last day) so I always call mousekeeping and let them know I'm vacating and they can start cleaning the room sooner rather than later.

Can't believe your friend did that after being told to call, and after having called the night before was told no. SO GLAD they were charged the extra points!!! How long is "a few hours" anyway? More than 2, which would be "a couple". What time did they finally check out? 2 pm? 3 pm? Just sitting there in their in the room, stubbornly watching TV, as the poor housekeeper kept knocking on the door? I honestly cannot imagine how someone could be that way. Do you really want these people as friends????

Totally agree - her thinking the resort wasn't full doesn't justify staying past check-out time. It's like thinking if you have a rental car that needs to be returned by a particular time but the agency always has dozens of cars on the lot then you can just bring your rental back couple of hours later without incurring an additional day charge.

The member always has the option to add another night if they want to stay later.

Agreed. This is what I'm doing for Nov. Booked Wed.-Sun. Flight on Sunday night doesn't leave until 7:30, so I won't be leaving the resort until 5PM.

I booked the room for Sunday night, so I can use the room all day. If I want to swim, take a nap, etc. I can. Even had to pay for the meal plan for the day, because I have to take it for my entire stay. That's ok -I gotta eat!

Very smart way to do things. If you have the points and your comfort comes first (and it should), it's a very sound way of travelling. No stress, I like it. No inconvenience to anyone else, and you don't expect to get something free that other get charged for.

Have a great time! :flower3:

They were told no, and stayed anyway? The check-in CM was mistaken, but your friends were set straight. I'm glad they were charged.

Bobbi:goodvibes

Amen.

DVC has a formal policy against late checkouts, any member should know this and I'm pretty sure it's in the check in paperwork. How busy the resort is makes no difference. I'm doubting they were told it might be OK, only to check back to see, a big difference in my book though it ultimately wouldn't affect me feelings on the subject.
I wonder if the CM thought the person had asked if they could stay late
-and told the friend "no"
and then was asked another question that the CM thought was whether the stay could be extend
- which the CM answered, "the resort is not full, but you will need to call in the morning to make sure that it is OK."

We have been in a resort that was not full, but that doesn't mean our room was not going to be re-assigned the next day. From what I've seen, if the resort is not full, they group guests to certain buildings or certain parts of the building. So, even if the resort was not full, the part of the resort the friend was in very well might have been. Grouping guests makes sense from a staffing perspective because it would be more efficient for Housekeeping to clean a lot of rooms in one place rather than a few here, a few there, etc.

Also, I'd would expect they staff based on occupancy. If there are a certain number of rooms to be cleaned as check outs during that day, that would be staffed for. That would also assume that Housekeeping would reasonably be able to get into any of those rooms by check out time (or maybe a few minutes after. Late checkouts mean the Housekeeper has to waste time going back and rechecking whether the guest is out yet.
Time that could be better spent cleaning. 5 minutes here and 5 minutes there add up. Late check outs could mean the Housekeeper(s) get behind enough that they have to stay overtime (costing us members more). It also could mean that the Housekeeper doesn't get the full time for cleaning. That may have something to do with complaints about rooms that are not adequately cleaned.

Because we need a room with a roll in shower, they can't just give us any room that is ready when we arrive - we need the room that has been assigned to us. That usually means that we won't get our room until after the 4pm check in time. Sometimes considerably later. We've already had to wait for a room until 6pm:eek:
Whether it was because someone didn't get out of that room on time or whether other people didn't leave on time and the housekeeper got behind (or just because someone left a mess). At any rate, people leaving late does potentially impact other guests.

We'll never know. Sometimes we hear things differently than they are intended. Also, it's possible that the CM said whatever they said to avoid any confrontation. Easier to say check back than to say no, esp in person.

I don't understand why your friend would need to stay in the room anyway....

On the day we leave we put all of our cases in the car and treat the day as any other at WDW. And then before we leave for the airport we freshen up at the spa where everything is provided :woohoo: Its actually really nice to have a shower, shave etc before having the long flight home to.

That stinks...Could the friend have stayed then if she was charged the extra points?

My understanding is technically no due to the holdover laws in FL but assumes that the hotel follows the requirements of the statute which does not appear to be the case in this situation. Realistically they likely could have due to the likelihood they actually added that day to their reservation.
