BAD EXPERIENCE - Stay Past check out time at SSR?

Newbie here, so I don't know the answer to this, but do the DVC's have a bell service your luggage can be left with so you can vacate the room before 11 am, enjoy the rest of the resort or one of the parks that day until you would need to leave for the airport? Some of the flights I have looked at have a late (5pm or later) departure time. I would rather check out and leave my luggage at bell services if possible and enjoy the park or the pool or DTD for the afternoon. Thanks for any information you can give me and maybe the OP would be interested also.:)

Yes, Disney has ALWAYS offered this. They will gladly hold on to whatever you have while you go out for the day.

Back to the original post, DVC has so cool when it comes in to check int so lets focus on that!! They give us the rooms early (sometimes WWWAAAYYY to early ;) ) when its ready so this is where their flexibility is. If they were always strict and said 4pm, no exceptions my family would have never recovered from red eye or early am flights! Since they have always been so amazing with this early check in then I say LISTEN TO THEM FOR CHECK OUT!!

Sorry your friend had to learn the hard way!

DVC is not here to respond to your rules. I doubt that anyone told her she could stay after check out. This rule has been standard at DVC for years.

I think it's totally unfair that she was charged an extra 11 points.

She should've been charged more as a penalty - another 5 minimum - on top of the 11. She was only charged for what she took without permission.

If I go into a supermarket and walk out with something in my pocket, should they let me just pay what the item costs when they catch me?

I'm exaggerating a bit, but still...

I don't think DVC can assess "penalty points". They charged her for another night, which was fair.

My friend had a pretty crappy experience at SSR where she wanted to stay past the 11am checkout time and she got a hard time.

When she checked in they told her she could stay past 11am no problem i thikn just pending availability but that the resort was not at capacity, just alert the front desk the night before she leaves.

She then tried to alert then she was going to stay later than 11am the night before as she was told and the front desk people told her no way even though the resort was not full they had already lined up someone to take her exact room when she left. they then proceeded to charge my friend 11 points for staying the extra few hours in her room.

Has anyone had experiences such as this for extended their stay by merely a few hours at a DVC resort?? this is terrible especially when the resort is barely being occupied.

Ok I have not read a single response but your friend was way out of line. There is no late check out with DVC. :sad2:

i have 2 issues with the arguments against this:

1) the person who told her upon checkin that she can stay past checkout no problem was dead wrong. if the rules are so tight then why did this person indicate it wasnt a problem>???

2) i can understand if you all disagree that my friend asked to say past checkout thats fine but the part that everyones missing is that the hotel is at low capacity. even if someone was supposed to stay in that room, big deal there were so many rooms that they could have easily been put somewhere else. my friend was undertstanding to the fact that if the resort is full she would have had to go but the resort was very empty.

#1 should have never happened...the CM was wrong.
#2 low capacity also means low staff scheduled. The housekeepers are required to clean an X amount of rooms within a certin period of time. Waiting for a guest to leave after the original check out times causes problems for the HK department.

Coming from a DVC member that had to wait till 7pm to get our villa (at SSR)on our last vacation with a car full of groceries I think 11points is a small price to pay.

I tend to wonder if they were actually her points or whoever DVC membership she used is not going to be happy. Maybe they should just charge her rack rate instead. $315

I think most members understand late check out is a no no especially when she check the night befoe and was told no. How much clearer can you be.

I have had to pack up damp clothes before to get out on time but, I know I wouldn't want to have to wait on my room because someone else was a holdover.

If they let one person stay late then everyone will want to stay late and next thing you know check in time will be 9 PM. :scared1:

My guess is that there was an honest misunderstanding -- either the CM misunderstood the question or the guest misunderstood the answer.

Yes, there is no problem staying at the resort past check-out time -- using the pool, the exercise room, the parking lot, Disney transportation, and the other facilities and amenities of the resort. It's even possible to use the showers at exercise room before catching a late flight home.

However, guests are not allowed to stay in the room past 11:00 a.m. on checkout day, for all the reasons discussed in this thread.

By the way, DVC is generous in letting us stay until 11:00 a.m. I've stayed at other timeshare resorts where the checkout time is 10:00 a.m.

I would challenge the statement that SSR was at "low capacity." DVC resorts and other timeshare resorts, by definition, tend to be at or near full occupancy throughout the year, even during the most "off season" times of the year. If there are rooms that would otherwise be empty, the resort often uses the opportunity to perform maintenance and refurbishment. That's what makes the economics of timeshares work out favorably for the developer and the owner/member. That's why the DVC point charts for Adventure Season encourage DVC members to book rooms during months when the demand has traditionally been low.

Incoming guests are assigned to rooms based on their needs and preferences, and based on the efficient use of the rooms (so that guests do not need to move mid-stay). Incoming guests legitimately expect to be able to enter their room at or before 4:00 p.m.

And we wonder what is wrong with today's children. They are learning by example. If I tell my daughter not to do something and she does it, she is put in a time out. She now knows when mommy says NO I mean No, and she is not even 3 yet! I understand the disapline and punishment are words that some people would like stricten for the dictionary, but contary to popular belief there are still a few of us who do not take the anything goes attitude and do expect people to pay for doing whatever they want when told No about something. I am actually thrilled to here that Disney charged them.

The CM must have misunderstood the question. I would never think of asking for late checkout at DVC resorts for the reasons already mentioned, but I frequently ask for and receive late checkout at the hotels when I have a ME bus picking me up in the afternoon -- and you never ask the CM's at the desk. You always have to call Housekeeping, if you do ask at or call the front desk, they tell you to call Housekeeping.

so, what happens if somebody rents their points to a "guest" who decides to stay...does the member get the surchargepopcorn::

I think DVC has always been clear about check-out time. It's right on the confirmation. How would you feel if you were the person waiting for the room because the person before did not vacate on time? Not only waiting for the person to leave, but also for the room to be cleaned.

I think a strict "no late checkouts" is fair to all members, not making exceptions here and there. The member always has the option to add another night if they want to stay later.

Even when my husband had a fall in the room (cracked his head open on armoire--stitches---a real mess), they gave him a hard time about leaving later the next day. He couldn't do the parks for very long and just wanted to rest before the ME bus and when the front desk called housekeeping they said flat out NO, we couldn't stay in the room. We stayed anyways, he had a headache and was in no shape to be walking around. When they knocked on the door i said you're welcome to do whatever you need to do. I reminded her of the accident and she apologized. Heck of a way to celebrate a 25th anniversary, lol.
PS: this was a studio at WLV and we were only 1-2 hrs past checkout.

Excellent question....would be interested in what MS would have to say to that question.

If you asked a CM's permission and the CM gave it to you, then you shouldn't be chewed out now for breaking the rules.

Next time, if a CM tells you it's OK to break the rules, make a note of the CM's name. Later, if there's a problem, a manager is more likely to honor what the CM promised (and in some cases is legally bound to do so).

Noting the CMs name probably won't do much good - the 11am checkout time is something that is on the form you sign - its a form of contract you make with the resort. Its also in the documents we have from DVC - in those contracts. Verbal assurances from CMs isn't going to mean squat against the contracts you've signed your name to.

Getting it in writing from a CM would probably not be much better, as rank and file Disney CMs would not be authorized to deviate from contracts - the Manager of the resort probably has the authority.

I would think and hope so!!! It's just another reason I'm not comfortable renting my points out to strangers.

since i am brand new to dvc I never knew about the extra point charge...
you learn something new everyday :thumbsup2

Why not just stay the entire day and night for free? There are so many rooms and they weren't full...what's it going to hurt one room being used a little longer? Wrong - Disney, and all other resorts/hotels, have to draw the line in the sand somewhere.

For me one of the larger concerns would be mousekeeping - they are obviously on a very tight schedule and folks not vacating is going to push that schedule back. It is really not fair to make someone work over their alloted shift just because you don't want to move. Rules are rules period.

As stated earlier, I think it's wrong to stay past check out time.
That said, I don't really think the reason is always housekeeping.

For example, if the resort is full it will take housekeeping much longer to get to that room; or at least have the option of cleaning that room later rather than sooner.
If the resort is slow, that room would need to be earlier on their "to do" list.
