Hi i am in ROFR now (probably should not count my chickens yet) but here goes. The contract i am bidding on will have 73 points bank in the year 2018. My use year is February . I would like to take a trip for thanksgiving 2018 from 11/19/2018-11/25/2018 6 nights and total. My home resort is animal kingdom, if at the 11th month mark I'd booked the one bedroom Savannah view at animal kingdom it should cost around 213 points(I should have enough points because i have 73 banked points and will get 200 more in February at 2018 am I correct) the reason for the one bedroom is we are family of five. My oldest is not sure if he will be able to come with us next year because of his job(he will not know until round this time next year) so would I be able to make a reservation at seven month mark, for let's say boardwalk villas studios that sleeps just four. For the exact same dates 11/19/2018-11/25/2018 that should cost about 103 points. Any tips on how I should go about doing this would be greatly appreciated

Good luck with ROFR!

You should plan on staying at your home resort over Thanksgiving. BWV studios usually get fully booked over peak times (Thanksgiving is one of them) well before the 7 month window opens up. It is not a backup plan. I'll try to send you the link to @skier_pete 's chart of availability - it's from 2015 and if anything, fall times are even harder to book now than they were in 2015.

Yeah, your odds of a BWV studio (which sleeps 5) at 7 months for Thanksgiving for 6 nights is terrible, even though you at least priced it using Garden/Pool.

I think the only 7 month switches you should feel any solid hope about are Saratoga or OKW, or downgrading to a studio at AKV. If you are faster than others on the draw, there may be a shot at Copper Creek, as declared units should outpace home resort points sold to book for at least 18 months.

Thanks for the link is very helpful. It looks like the animal kingdom studio will be available around thanksgiving time next year. Could I booked both the one bedroom and the studio and cancel round this time next year whichever one I don't need how would I do that

1) BTW - it can be risky to travel in November with a Feb UY. Be aware of that.

2) You can book whatever you have the points to book at 11 months out.

If you use current UY pts to book the stay, there is no penalty as long as you cancel over a month from your stay AND before your banking window closes (September 30 for a Feb UY.)

If you use banked or borrowed pts, they cannot be moved back to their original UY but will expire if not used to complete a stay in their new UY, so that is important to remember as well.

Thank you for all the great information still trying to wrap my head around all this so please bear with me. Sense I will have 73 points bank from the year 2017 do I have to specifically say which reservation they will be use for the one bedroom or the studio or just as long as I use them in the year 2018 they will be the first points used up. And to make a reservation 11 months out can I borrow from 2019 just a hold the reservation till I decide which one I need

Once points are borrowed, it is permanent. Banking and borrowing are final transactions that move points into the designated year.

The cheapest way to do what you want is the following:

book a studio value room at AKV for the times you want -- you will likely have to walk this contract. Click here: https://www.disboards.com/threads/walking-a-reservation.3436706/

Then book the 1 BD savannah for the times you want. The 1 BD will not go all that quickly -- the studio value room will go likely prior to the 11 month window. You might have to start your walk in October or November. I've never paid attention to AKV availability -- so I do not know. Worst case, you should be able to get a standard room without too much trouble though.

The value and savannah room will cost you 284 points. You have 273 points in that UY, so you'll have to borrow 11 points.

When you inevitably cancel one of the rooms, you'll be using those borrowed points from 2019 points, but that isn't that big of a deal.

For 4 or 5 I'd just plan on the 1 BR and not worry about it whether it be BWV or AKV though it's be simpler to stick with AKV and be done with it once you get through ROFR and get your points in the system.

Thanks for the shout-out on the link! yes - I agree that getting a BWV studio for Thanksgiving week is a slim chance, though honestly that week is easier to get other options at 7-months than the weeks around it. In fact, the Holiday weeks are NOT the most popular weeks on the DVC calendar, that's actually the first two weeks in December and then most of October and early November. However, BWV is still a tough get for Thanksgiving.

The cheapest way to do what you want is the following:

The value and savannah room will cost you 284 points. You have 273 points in that UY, so you'll have to borrow 11 points.

When you inevitably cancel one of the rooms, you'll be using those borrowed points from 2019 points, but that isn't that big of a deal.

Here's the problem with this suggestion.

From what I see you have the following:
73 banked points good during Feb 1, 2018 to Jan 31, 2019
200 points for UY Feb 1, 2018 to Jan 31, 2019
200 points for UY Feb 1, 2019 to Jan 31, 2020 that could be borrowed.

You could book a 1 BD Savannah view for those 6 nights = 231 points
AND Book a studio (value) view for those 6 nights = I get 71 points - not 53 points.
Total points needed = 302 points.

Use would use you 273 points in the 2018 UY, and borrow 29 points from the 2019 UY.

The problem is - if you then CANCEL the one bedroom - you now only need 71 points. But you have 73 banked points + 29 borrowed points which run out on Jan 31, 2019. You only need 71 for the studio, so therefore you end up with 31 points that need to be used by Jan 31, 2019 and can't be banked. Unusable points is the cardinal sin of DVC.

Here's what I suggest you do instead for your situation:

Instead of booking a 1-bedroom at AKV - Savannah view - book TWO studios AKV savannah view.

This will cost you 220 points total (110 points for each studio). Your 73 banked points and 147 of your 2018 UY points. You won't have to borrow any points.

Since your oldest son is old enough to be working for a living, I'm assuming that the oldest could stay in the 2nd studio with the middle sibling, and the youngest could stay in the room with you. You probably won't get adjoining rooms, but the rooms could be very close. I don't know your full situation - so if that isn't acecptable maybe this is a terrible idea. The only other loss would be the lack of a kitchen and laundry in this case - you still get two full bathrooms this way - but in terms of "Saving" your points it's beneficial.

See, this way, if you have to cancel ONE of the rooms, you can still use your 73 banked points, and then 37 of your 2018 UY points, and the remaining 110 points for the cancelled 2nd room you would be able to bank to 2019 UY. No lost points. (You would have to bank the points by September 30th, but I assume you would know in advance of that date whether you needed both rooms.)

This would also leave you the option of trying to replace ONE of studio reservations with a BWV reservation at the 7-month mark, or even waitlisting a BWV reservation to replace one of the AKV studio reservations (the one with the banked points) - and then if it comes through (again before September 30th) - you would then have the 5-person BWV room, and could cancel the second AKV studio and again just go ahead and bank those points - and again no risk of losing unbankable points.

Just my 2 cents.

You could borrow the 2019 points but they would then stay in your 2018 UY and would not be returned to the 2019 when you cancel one of the rooms. I agree to just LAN on staying in the 1br. Once your son knows if he can make it or not you then if not you can see if there's a studio anywhere to switch to and do that then. Or set up a waitlist to try and change. I'd not borrow just to have a backup smaller room available.

I was going off https://www.dvcrequest.com/cost-calculator.asp. For 11/19 checking out 11/25 -- it shows 213 points for the 1BD savannah. 213+71=284.

Oh, maybe I flopped the numbers. 213 instead of 231. Doesn't change the issue though - if you cancel the 1-bedroom you will end up with points that you can't bank.

You're right -- I just figured the 11 points at risk are worth it in this situation since booking the value rooms at AKV is only 71 points (and with the lost 11 points, the effective cost of that room is now 82 points) -- which is still less points than any other option he'd have. (Standard AKV would be 88 points). I'm assuming he would not have any chance of booking the cheap rooms at BWV, OKW, or SSR at 7 months during Thanksgiving week? Perhaps he should just book the standard view studio as a back-up since it won't effectively be that much more expensive (88 points vs 82) than the value room, and if they decide to stay in the studio, they at least wouldn't have any wasted points.

Of course -- I'm willing to bet that OP decides to just stay in the 1 BR regardless of whether oldest son makes the trip.

They are a lot nicer than studios. Two full bathrooms also can't be understated (so long as you stay at kidani).

This will of course lead OP to the inevitable add-onitis in order to forever stay in 1 BRs. 1
