I just cancelled our Keys to the Kingdom tour and booked the Backstage Safari tour at the Animal Kingdom. Can anyone give me an recent reviews, insights, description, anything about the Backstage Safari tour? I would love to hear about it. Thanks! :)

My daughter and I did just this past December. It was her 18th birthday gift as she wants to be a vet. It took us back to some of the animal areas, got to see behind one of the parts of the Kilamanjaro Safari, got to go to the nutrition area where they prepare the meals for all of the animals, got to go to the Vet Clinic and talk to a tech and see where you can actually stand to watch a surgery or an animal having a checkup. We also got to go into a room where we had water and snacks and meet one of the "zookeepers" who brought an owl in and told us about the owls. At the end we got a special safari ride.

It was a very nice tour - although this was the first "behind the scenes" type of tour that we have done. It was just a very nice experience. I would recommend it but, like I said, we were partial to it because of my daughter getting ready to enter college and wanting to become a vet. She does want to work at AK sometime in her future.

I hope you enjoy it!

We did it 3 years ago and it was amazing! We got to see parts of AK that we otherwise wouldn't have! I highly recommend it although, TKKT tour is also amazing! Can't go wrong with either one!

Does the tour get bumpy like the safari ride at the park?

My Mum would love this tour but I am pregnant and will prob. need to avoid it if its as bumpy as the actual ride!!!

xxx

The cost is $70 per person (I believe it was $60 or $65 last year) and is a 3 hour long tour.

The only bumpy part was the safari ride. It's the same ride but you have a guide that tells you things about it that you don't get from the regular ride. And this is at the very end so if you have to bug out of that it's okay. They do take you to areas in vans but there is some walking. Just tell the guide you need to go slower and they'll make sure you do. And there are plenty of places with restrooms so that wasn't a problem at all.

I am so glad to hear all of this info. It makes me very excited. I think my husband will like this tour better than the KTTK tour. I'm glad they will take us on the safari ride as part of it.

To answer the question about cost, I just booked it this afternoon and with my Disney Visa discount, it came to $56 per person.

We just did this tour this morning and loved it. It was very interesting and I was amazed to see how much Disney does for animal conservation. Have also done the KTTK tour and like someone else said you can't go wrong with either one.

how far in advanced do you have to book the tour?
can you do it the day you go to AK?

Our tour was first thing in the morning so I believe it depends on the time. I would think you'd need to book it at least a day ahead in case they are full. disney.com under Animal Kingdom has all the details.

are your kids going?
i looked on the disney site and you had to be 16 or 18 to go on it.
i was going to do this tour but my dd11 is not old enough.

we booked the 1:00 tour so we could do attractions early before the crowds, then tour when things were getting busy. It was excellent. I understand that some things change, but here is what we did

  • viewed the elephant & giraffe living areas
  • toured the nutrition area, including kitchen and storage
  • toured the aviari area - met the director
  • (each area included plenty of time & narration for what happens, plus demonstrations.)
  • toured the back of Rafiki's - all the vet areas, and met one of the doctors.
  • rode the safari with our guides narration of how the safari is put together
  • received a special Back Stage pin

We stayed busy the entire time. When backstage, you are shuttled in a 15 passenger van, so while there is walking, it is minimal.
