My husband and I both carry a backpack and we put it on the flr of the ride and if its a tossy type ride we put our legs through the straps and pull our legs out to the side and then in and back towards us - somehow this keeps them snug and safe - I know sounds silly/weird - but it works .
However there is little( to say the least) floor room on space mountain so get in put each shoulder strap on to each side of the safety bar (pretend the safety bar is you and face the backpack accordingly)when you pull the safety bar foward push backpack down and hold it with knees and wrap hands through straps and hold safety bar at center under pack - trust me that pack is not going anywhere.
Again I admit it sounds weird but it works.
