Hello!

I was wondering . . . If my DH were to bring a backpack onboard, is that considered his '1 personal item' ?

I am guessing you are asking about on an airline. If so, yes.

DH took his backpack and his suitcase. This was counted as 1 personal item and 1 carry-on.

The backpack would be a carry on. "For carry-on baggage, all customers traveling on ******* Airways will be restricted to one carry-on item and one personal item. Personal items include handbags, umbrellas, walking sticks, coats, cameras, reading matter, infant food, briefcases, and laptop computer."

:flower3: A regular school bag or smaller backpack should be fine as a personal item. It should fit under the seat on a airplane. A gym bag size or larger backpack is a carry on.

I think it often depends on the airline and the country you are flying in and out of. I think a personal item covers a small back pack, ladies handbag/purse, laptop bag.

If it can fit under the seat in front of you, then it can count as your personaly item in my book!

I always take a REALLY large purse as my personal item. I've never had a problem. I don't see why a small backpack would be a problem. There are backpack styled purses.

i've always used a regular sized backpack and a small duffel bag but that was all i brought -for two adults. We always just put them under the seat. However, for this upcoming trip i bought fancy mickey luggage and now have an actual carry-on bag that rolls! so for the personal item (i have a question open about this, no answers though) I have been wondering what is allowed...i mean is it a size requirement or does it HAVE to technically be a purse, laptop, briefcase, or small backpack? I have a mickey duffel that is quite small and is 31 linear inches. For the personal item NorthWest says it cannot exceed 15x11x6. Mine is 15x7x9.

I called them since emailing was of no help. They said that if it can fit under the seat in front of you it is ok.

I think i'll bring it, I just wont pack it full. Another tough one on the backpack, since it says 'small.' I would measure it and see if it fits their size requirement.

I think a not so full mickey duffel would be okay. I think the idea is one suitcase and one thing that can fit under the seat in front of you.

Traveling on Jet Blue, I always take a duffel bag size luggage, and a camera bag large enough for a still camera and a camcorder. I've never had a problem.

i'm thinking that also, i wont pack it much at all... i just really need a separate bag to put in my floral for my wedding, two bouquets and two boutonieers.

thanks for the advice!

As a very rough guideline, if two of the items, side by side, end to end, or one atop the other won't fit in the airline's sizing template or frame, then expect the item not to pass as your personal item.
