Back to School

In lower Alabama, the public schools start around the 7th of August. Too early to suit me but they didn't ask the teachers!
Have a great trip!:wave2:

My four Jersey Girls start school the Wed after Labor Day and get out in the "later middle" part of June. Jersey also gets a teachers convention break in the beginning of November (I know a lot of Jersey families go to Disney that week!), four days for Thanksgiving (they are hardly in school in November!) We also get about 1 week off between Christmas and New Years, a mid winter recess (around President's week in February) AND a week for spring break (the week after Easter)!!!
:crazy:
Let me just say, I grew up in Jersey and don't remember getting that many days off!!! It wasn't THAT long ago, although my girls would disagree!!! :crazy2: :thewave:

Around here (south eastern wisconsin - milwaukee area) the kids go back to school just after labor day. And it seems they get out mid june

In Worcester MA where I live the kids go back to school the Tuesday before Labor day. My nephews go back the Wedsnesday after Labor day. All schools around here get out the in the middle of June depending on snow days.

Michigander here, our schools (near Detroit) go back August 30th and then have Sept. 3rd off for Labor Day Weekend. ~:D~

All you southerners, do you get a lot of days off during the year, or do you get out of school a lot earlier than we do?! We usually get out around May 26. The only time we get off a lot of days is Christmas break, 7-10 depending on what day Christmas is on, and Spring Break, 5. There are several 3 day weekends during the year, but not a lot.

Just wondering, you guys go back really early!!:earseek:

You are right. I was just looking at my the school calendar and realized that this next school year they are going back almost two weeks earlier and getting out almost a week later. They have added about two and a half weeks "more" of holiday vacation time. A full week during Thanksgiving week, plus a 5 day Fall Break in October and a 5 day Winter break in February. YIKES!!!! I didn't realize this. :rolleyes: I Must have been snoozin' when that memo came out. :sleep: On the bright side, I have two more weeks that I can take advantage of Disney without taking DD out of school. :teeth:

Westfield-Washington schools (suburb north of Indianapolis) start back on August 16.

That's one of the main things I love about the NYC public school calander. We have so much time off during the year, I really don't feel the need to pull my son out of school for a trip to Disney.

Our last day of school will be June 25, they will return after Labor Day. Our schools are closed for all federal holidays and some years 2 Jewish holidays; Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. (I believe these depend on what day of the week they fall on)

2 days for Thanksgiving, one week for Christmas, one week for mid winter break (President's week) and one week for Easter. Easter break can be longer depending on when Passover is. This year since Easter and Passover were so close together, that break was 7 days instead of 5.

Madison county AL. schools:

We are on the " year round system" but I think from reading some other post it is very similar to other schools. We have, in the past, finished May 31. This yea, however, we do not go back after Memorial Day. Our last school day is May 27th. We have always gone back on August 1 ( if it falls during a week day). We have a 2 week break the first 2 weeks of October then 3 days at Thanksgiving, 2 1/2 weeks at Christmas, 2 weeks the end of March and several 3 day weekends here or there. We have a total of 2-3 snow days built in for our "big " snows we get here. If they are not needed then we have a 3 day weekend added in April or May.

i think we too go for 180 something instructional days. Our system does allow extra times during the year for DISNEY FUN!!!

I live and teach in northeastern PA. We start school the Monday before Labor Day. We also have Labor Day off, so the next week is like starting the school year all over again.

Oak Ridge, TN here...(outside of Knoxville- GO VOLS)

We started back Aug 18 and our last day is May 25th. We have the 180 days of school rule thing, too, I think. We have "short day" on each Wednesday, plus being a private school, we have several holidays...

Labor Day;
Day After Labor Day; (Perfect for Disney Trips in the fall);
Oct 3; Staf Dev;
Oct 20 - Staff Dev;
3 days at Thanksgiving;
2 weeks + 1 1/2 days for Christmas;
MLK Jr Day;
Feb 13;
Feb 16;
Mar 15;
Good Friday and the whole next week

Geez, seems like alot looking at it. We start class at 7:50 and end at 3:00, is our day longer than average, maybe?

trracers - That is the same time our school starts and ends. We start a few days later than you, though, so that's part of the difference.

G & J's Mom - you're right, it would be nice to have those breaks in the fall and winter to be able to plan a trip. Once our school starts, the only long "vacation" we get is for Christmas break, which is still only 7 days, usually. If Christmas falls mid-week, though, it ends up being about 10 days. This is the busiest time at WDW, though, so it doesn't help us!:rolleyes: We have always had a week in March for Spring Break, but this year, they changed it to 2 days in March, and 2 days at Easter. It just gets better and better!:eek: I end up taking DD out of school for one or two days when we travel.

To the posters who mentioned that you have to make up snow days for even "one snowflake," :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: ! We continue to have school unless the snow is mixed with ice, this year they even attempted to keep school open during an ice storm, but there were several wrecks in the school parking lot, and one school bus had an accident as well(no major injuries, thank goodness!) School officials learned their lesson, and now we have several snow days to make up, too.
