Back to school nerves...

My son is going to a new school for a year. He will taking part in a Primary Language class. I am TERRIFIED for him, and he is as usual, fine. The class is small, only 12, and a Teacher and full time EA. We are so lucky to have gotten a spot. I am just nervous for the school yard stuff. In the past he has had 2 older brothers around to kind of look out for him (they have great friends as well that have such patience with him) Because as you know he spends lunch and recess alone wander around, or playing with imaginary characters (from Star Wars mostly) The change also means a school bus. The bus picks up and drops off at our driveway which is great.

After this year he will return to our home school for grade 3. Sorry to go on, but September 8th is coming way to fast for this Mom!

I wouldn't be too too worried about it. A lot of children nowadays are more accepting of their classmates that have disabilities. All of my students are mainstreamed, and their classmates are very, very accepting of them.

As far as the playground time goes you have to remember that he is perfectly happy wondering around talking to imaginary charters. Even if his brothers were at the old school did they have recess at the same time? I know mine don't in fact it's usually big news when they see each other during school.

Bullying is always a concern with our children. If the school has an effective bullying prevention policy he should be fine as long as the staff understand and monitor the special risk that his unstructured environment engenders. I am not familiar with Canadian law but for my child I had his “space” designated as a special area of concern for bullying which requires that the school take such extra steps as are needed to monitor and have a plan for preventing bullying in his “space”.

If you can get the staff to read the book “Perfect Targets” by Rebekah Heinrichs, that will help a lot.

It is indeed a scary time, although as long as there's good communication and everyone makes an effort usually it is all plain sailing! Although I have NOT had that experience moving across to FL, a new house, new school and new staff and children. The first couple of weeks have been like a roller coaster and now his teacher of three weeks will be transferring to a different position within the school. NOT GOOD. He hs been mainstreamed 3rd grade but requires a lot of IEP accommodations and assistance. Oh dear, I am rambling. I wish I could off load it all on here. And to top it all off mu husband is deployed until March 2010. But HEY, we're off to Disney September 28 - 30 (and I have had a grand time on the boards having a nosey and you guys have such valuable information!)
