We are heading on vacation this month and I am trying to find a way to get to the parks without getting on the dreaded I-4. We are staying in Kissimmee off of HWY 192. There is a great shortcut to Disney by using a toll road - 429 I think - that gets you on Disney property in less than 10 minutes but no such luck finding an alternative to UA/IOA. Anyone traveled a different route?

You can take Apopka-Vineland Rd. from 192 in Kissimmee to Lake Buena Vista and then take Palm Parkway (which turns into Turkey Lake Rd.) all the way to Universal. It may take longer than I-4 though.

192 in Kissimmee covers a lot of territory. However, based on your mention of the 429, it sounds like you're at the western end of the 192 corridor.

If you're near Sherberth Rd and want to completely avoid I4, you can take Sherberth to Osceola Parkway, turn right to head east on Osceola, and continue past the I4 exit to I-Drive South. Turn left, then make either the left just past the Nickelodeon Hotel or the next left and proceed to SR-536. Turn right on 536 and continue across the light at SR-535/Apopka Vineland Rd (stopping if it is red of course) and make the next left onto International Drive (just before the entrance to 417). Continue past the traffic signal at Vineland Ave and make the next left at the new traffic signal (don't ask me what they named the road). This will take you over I4 and at the light, turn right onto Turkey Lake. Continue up Turkey Lake, passing Sand Lake Rd, and make a right just past the Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Proceed straight into the the Universal guest parking facility.

This may seem a bit more circuitous than turning left onto 535, however, the section of 535 between SR-536 and Palm Parkway can be a worse traffic nightmare than I4.

I also want to add that I4 really isn't that bad most days. I find driving on 192, with it's multitude of stoplights, much more frustrating that driving on I4, even on a bad traffic day. Also, if traffic is bad on I4, the traffic on the other roads will also be worse than normal.

OK I think I know pretty much every route to get from the Disney area to Universal avoiding I-4.First of all if you're staying on 192 you can also get inside Disney property by taking Sherberth rd,this is a true shortcut as this is a very nondescript entrance that is pretty much a service road, you enter Disney property by AK on Osceola pkwy,I love going this way since the traffic on Osceola is pretty good and moves fairly fast.Another thing is that from those western areas of 192 it's pretty far to Universal and these are only options to get you there but are not likely to be faster than I-4.Here are the options.

1.Enter Sherberth rd from 192, go east on Osceola pkwy, turn left on Victory way, turn right on Buena Vista dr.Get on Epcot Center Dr/World Center dr (536) going east, basically the opposite way of Epcot, take that past 535,you'll see the Caribe Royale on your left and International Drive will be just past the 535 and the Caribe Royale, turn left on International drive and go past Sea World and right after you pass the Convention center you'll see Pointe Plaza ave, turn right on it and then turn left on Universal Blvd and follow it to the park. You could stay on International Drive instead of turning on Pointe Plaza but you will get more traffic on I-Drive.If you do take I-Drive you will eventually hit Universal blvd again, turn left.

2.Enter Sherberth rd from 192, go east on Osceola pkwy, turn left on Victory way, turn right on Buena Vista dr,turn left on Bonnet Creek pkwy, then right on Vista Blvd, then right on Winter Garden Vineland rd,then left on Apopka Vineland rd and take that all the way to W Sand Lake rd,you'll go through Orlando's Restaurant row, turn left on Turkey lake rd and then right on Hollywood way straight to Universal parking.Instead of taking Bonnet creek pkwy and Vista you could also go strainght on Buena vista dr to Hotel plaza blvd and turn left on Apopka Vineland rd,but of course more traffic that way.

3.Option 3 you'll be doing the same thing as option 2 to reach Apopka Vineland rd,you could go either way, Bonnet Creek to Vista and then Winter garden Vineland rd or Buena vista to Hotel Plaza blvd.If you take Hotel Plaza blvd you would turn left on Apopka Vineland rd and then turn right on Palm pkwy which becomes Turkey Lake rd take that all the way to Hollywood way to Universal parking. If you go Bonnet Creek to Vista blvd to Winter Garden Vineland rd,Winter Garden Vineland rd becomes Palm pkwy so you would just go straight and Palm pkwy becomes Turkey lake rd,take that to Hollywood way to Universal parking.

4.Final way and to avoid any further confusion that I've probably given you is to reach Apopka Vineland rd either way I showed you in the previous options and instead of turning left, turn right,go under the I-4 overpass and then get on the left lane and turn left on Vineland ave, this will take you by the Premium outlets and will reach International dr.Turn left on I-Drive and then follow the instructions I gave on option 1 to get to the park.Confused yet??I've gone back and forth between Universal and Disney probably hundreds of times and I usually avoid I-4 but like I said it's not exactly faster than just getting on I-4.

This is the route that I plan to use this month while commuting from my hotel near 535 and Palm Parkway. My hope is that heading up to Hollywood Way on a surface street will be an improvement over joining the sea of vehicles exiting I-4 to Universal. I guess I'll find out the hard way.

A small added bonus is that, if I understand Universal's layout correctly, I'll get a glance at Cabana Bay en route to the parking garage.

If we stay at WBC, what's the quickest way to get to UO? I hear it's about 20 minutes drive there? TIA.

We never use the I-4............Palm Parkway/Turkey Lake Road to get too and from Royal Pacific is the way we go if we have been eating over at LBV area. Only ever takes about 15-20 minutes at most when we make that journey.

Unless we stop in at Wal-Mart on the way home......then it takes longer ::yes::

Thanks everyone for the tips!!!:cool1: I will certainly try them. I prefer back routes. Most times when I look this up I always get something including I-4 which is the most direct route. Now I have options :woohoo:
