Back from OKW - My thoughts

Just wanted to add our $.02. We know how many people just love OKW, and we decided to try it for the first time ourselves in early May because of the rave reviews by loyalists, because the pictures looked beautiful, and because the points were low and we just want to try all of the resorts. We're staying there in October, too, but only because nothing else was available. That's because, all and all, we felt like the minuses outweighed the plusses, but here are our accounts of both:

PLUSSES: Well the size of the Studio as compared to the other DVC Studios (and we only stay in Studios, so we noticed) did NOT disappoint. We thought it was huge -- especially the bathroom. And having one of us sleep in a second real bed instead of that disgraceful pullout was heaven. We also thought the room was one of the best kept/cleanest we'd been in (on par with VWL, and much nicer than BCV and BWV). Liked having the car within feet of our door! And, as I said, lower points was nice!

MINUSES: We thought it was very noisy, too. Doors slamming, people talking loudly outside. (Human nature, maybe, if you're not in an enclosed hallway but are still outside you just don't think to keep quiet?) Heard people through the connecting door (at 4:00 a.m. no less) and I never did at any of the other DVC rooms (luck of the draw?). "Bugged" us, too (pun intended), that the exterior doors with lights next to them meant mosquitoes and other bugs came in every time you came back to your room at night. Even though are car was close, we didn't like having to drive to the pool, restaurant(s), general store, etc., instead of just walking to them like at the other DVC resorts. But the biggest disappointment, is sort of intangible and tough to describe: We just felt there was no "WOW-factor." It did feel, as someone else said, that we were staying either off-site or, at best, at a moderate like Port Orleans (minus the plusses of the room size, etc., noted above). No WOW in the lobby like in the other resorts (VWL especially, but BCV and BWV too), where you walk in and really feel like you're in a 5-star hotel. Even before you get to the lobby, the drive-up/check-in area at the Hospitality House is small and unimpressive. Goods to Go was just a window, without the food selection, seating, or charm of a Roaring Forks at VWL or the new market at BCV. The whole "pier-like" (where Goods, the Fitness Center, etc., are) area seemed small and cramped, compared to having the Boardwalk right outside your room, or even VWL expansive lobby/eating areas.

Just our $.02. We felt a little underwhelmed and a little disappointed. Definitely not our first choice, but not anything we feel like we'd need to "avoid like the plague." We'll stay there in October, if our waitlist for one of the other resorts doesn't come through.

I guess that's why there are choices for everyone!

I would just point out that if you're staying in a OKW studio, you are really missing the best of what OKW has to offer. I get what you're saying about the location (although we've always been able to walk to at least a quiet pool) but it's the one bedrooms on up that make OKW a GREAT place to stay.

well that depends...if you are staying at OKW in a studio it means you aren't spendnig a ton of points, which means longer vacation...perhaps that is the best thing OKW has to offer ;)

Yup, exactly right. Staying there (if it winds up being twice this year) will allow us to get two full weeks in a Studio this year without borrowing points. So, I guess on that note, if it's stay home or go to Disney, I'll take OKW anytime! :thumbsup2

We have stayed in a studio, a 1 br and a 2 br at OKW. I agree with everyone that anything other than a studio is wonderful. You cannot beat the size of those rooms! But that being said, I still prefer the DVCs that are attached to a hotel. I will pay the extra points (and I am very frugal) and I will deal with the loss of space. To me it is worth it. It just feels more like a vacation when staying at that type of DVC. And I do not mind the walk to the car. No big deal.

But that is what is so nice about DVC. Imagine if everyone wanted to stay at the same resort? :confused3 :thumbsup2

While it's true that VWL, BCV and BWV have WOW lobbies, they're also the lobbies for the main resorts too. Those respective resorts had DVCs added on to them and the original lobbies were created with deluxe-style, paying-high-room-rate guests in mind. SSR does not have a WOW lobby either, which is fine for me because I'm not staying there for the lobby.

We have stayed in an OKW studio and will stay in one again, I'm sure. We're looking forward to being at OKW in a 1 bedroom beginning a week from tomorrow. We really want to see what the hype is about!!

I just want to say the I think that the lobby of the VWL is special and nice enough to stand alone, especially at Christmas with the beautiful tree. The little nooks and crannies with rocking chairs/comfortable chairs and fireplaces make me sooo happy that it's one of my homes. I wish I/we had more time to just sit and relax there when we go, but whatever time we did have, it wouldn't be enough.

They all have their charm, I think.

Bobbi :goodvibes

Bobbi, we have a new rule for when we check in to VWL. We actually just sit in the lobby (or explore it) while we wait for our villa to be ready, no parks. We waited about 2.5 hours this past December, and loved it!

Not for us. We loved the 2 bedroom we just had BUT, when we go without the family, we love the studio. This saves us enough points to go 3 times a year or save points towards a family vacation like we just took. OKW is not just about room size, its about being at Disney and enjoying one's self..smjj

Awww Muushka! I love your idea- WL lobby has sooo much to see! :)

We're planning to stay for the first time at OKW this Nov and I'm very excited to try it. We will be in a large 2BR this time as our party will be 3 adults and 3 kids, and I'm looking forward to the extra space. It's nice to need fewer points for larger accommodations!

I suppose that some may have been disappointed in OKW because they felt like they were far removed from the "Disney excitement", but, I'm choosing this resort BECAUSE I want to take a break from excitement and just have a laid-back, casual resort so we can relax and unwind after a day in the parks.

AAHHHHHH! :cloud9:

OP,

I'm sorry your trip was less than magical. Call me crazy but staying in a studio isn't really DVC in my eyes. If all I wanted was a studio I would have saved the buy in money and stayed at Values or moderate resorts. DVC is all about the space and a one bedroom unit or larger provides that luxury that justifies a buy in and annual dues.

DVC is great because it offers something for everyone. To me, OKW is the best of DVC. It is what all DVC Resorts should have been modeled after. Problem is they decided to chase the money and made the rooms smaller, piggyback off of the deluxe resorts thus flooding the existing infrastructure, made the balconies smaller and decided to cram more units per square foot. Works for them, I guess.

OKW has always been a respite from the hectiness of the parks and DTD. It is an oasis of calm and feels like I'm on vacation as opposed to being at WDW. Sorry you didn't enjoy that style. The good news is there is something you'll like better. Nsamely, BCV, and BWV. It also means one less person booking OKW, and that is good news indeed.

I hope your next trip is more magical.

Dave

This is not true for BWV . The Villa's and the Inn were created together as one joined resort from the beginning.

:)

Have no problems staying in studio at OKW, to us they have a lot more rm then other studio's in DVC resorts. Bus transportation has been good to us.

Wow. Guess my DH and I are way off base. We joined DVC 11 years ago, and we've spent all but two of our vacations in a studio. Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed the one bedrooms we had those two vacations, but we love the studio units. We're rarely in the room; we're either out enjoying the resort or the parks or everything else Disney has to offer. And we've never felt "deprived" of the DVC experience. But then, we had a really small wedding too (in the living room of our very modest bungalow--horrors!) and I guess some people would say we didn't really get "married" either. LOL. :rotfl2: To each his own. We're heading to another "meager" studio tomorrow and couldn't be happier!

Do you have kids? For two people the studio isn't bad, and we often stayed in one when it was just DH and me. But once DS came a long, studios became very cramped!

We also like to bring our friends and family with us, so the bigger units are a real plus.

Wow, I've been busy and not had time to check back to this thread but I appreciate all the healthy debate! :thumbsup2

I probably should've mentioned I am not a DVC owner. The DVC owners are my SO's parents, who we shared the studio with. They plan on taking many a trip where they are inviting large groups from their family so those are taking up most of the points for 1-2 bedrooms, etc..

I do believe we are staying in a 2 bedroom for our October trip at OWK. I had hoped for VWL, but beggars can't be choosers!

Thanks again all! :teeth:

Well I will be 'curious' :lmao: if the fact that you are in a 2 bedroom will make any difference about how you feel about OKW. Let us know!

OK your crazy (hey you asked :rotfl: ) Seems kind of bold to assume we cant enjoy prepaid vacations if its in a DVC studio. I would stay in a BCV/WLV/BWV studio not only over any Value or Moderate, but also over a 1BR at either OKW or SSR. I will even go as far to say that I have a studio ressie at VWL for 4 of us XMAS week and a studio at BCV for next spring break and will NOT trade either for a 2BR or G Villa at OKW or SSR if MS called and offered it (or from anyone on this board).

Fine opinion and I respect that, but BCV has almost doubled in value in 4 years, hmm.......

You can say that about Carribean Beach or Bonnet Creek for that matter, whats your point?

All I can say is, Wow. That's a unique way of thinking.
