We just got back from our first ever trip to the Fort and can't say enough great things about the vacation! We stayed in a cabin and it was absolutely fabulous. We (my husband, two young sons and I) loved everything- the golf cart, the cabin, the fishing, the grilling, the boat rental, the people watching, etc. We discovered that we LOVE fishing. We hardly even ventured into the parks.

Now all we can think of is when we can go back, which is funny considering that my husband had to convince me to go in the first place. I wasn't sure I was going to like the cabins and the resort but it was definitely one of our favorite vacations EVER and the main pool wasn't even open. We have ressies at the GF concierge in August....but I can hear the cabin calling my name. I'm thinking we'll switch that

Anyway, now I know why you all love the fort so much. My family and I love it now, too. I have a feeling I'm going to be here on this board quite a bit now, dreaming of my next Fort vacation. :goodvibes

Judging by your signature, you've stayed in nearly all the WDW resorts, so it says a lot that you are hooked on the Fort! If you are thinking of giving up the GF concierge level for FW, you definitely belong on this board!! We are all nuts that way. Despite what many people on the non-camping boards might think, we don't all stay at the Fort because we can't afford the hotels. Even if I could afford any of the villas, the GF, or the freakin Ritz, I'd still choose to spend my vacations at the Fort. It's a lifestyle choice, not a financial one. And you now get it too!

:woohoo: another convert. I know someone who will be glad you discovered the joys of fishing. :rolleyes1

It's official, you're a Fort Fiend: feel free to copy this...

Welcome to the Nut House!!!!!

So glad to read how great your trip was. In our family it's Dh who has to be convinced - claims he did all the camping he needed to in the army and then again with DS as a scoutleader - but he just doesn't get it. So, I just have to ask - what did he say to get you to give in and try it?

DD8 had been begging to tent camp for several years now, as did her big sis at the same age. I grew up camping with my dad and brother but haven't camped at the fort since I was young. These days there aren't a lot of places I'd feel safe camping alone with the DDs - come to think of it, FW might be the only one.

I've talked about it for a couple years now and something always comes up but holding a site and really hoping to drive down before DH this year for a few girly days at the fort before he meets us at BC for his vacation week. I can't wait to see the FW renovations in person and dunk my feet in that thar hot tub too...:rolleyes1

Welcome to the club. You're in good company here. ;)

PS
I have stayed at the Grand Floridian twice and though it's nice, I found it a bit to stuffy for my taste. I had a great time the first time, but the second time went down hill.

Dance Mom 3-DH is retired Army and I am about to retire from the National Guard. We don't like camping either!!! At least sleeping in a tent. I would consider a RV though. For that reason, we are Cabin Dwellers. We get the best of both worlds. My DH will only stay at the Fort. He loves to fish and I we all love the "nature" part of the fort. I try to convince people that we really do relax when we go to Disney.

to the OP. I am glad that you loved the fort!!! It can be addictive in a healthy way.

Funny, my dh was also in the Army and he isn't into tent camping, either. The cabin was a great fit for us though. To get me to go for it he just had to tell me it was something he wanted to try AND that his coworker he knows very well and trusts tried the cabins and liked them a lot. That was enough for me. I wasn't 100% convinced I would like it but I figured I'd give it a try.

I was looking for something different than the standard Disney vacation and that is exactly what I got. I loved it, plain and simple.

Thanks for all the welcomes. I know I'm going to really like it here :)

Mistaroo, in reading your post, I can actually feel the excitment and enthusiasm that you have for the Fort! Isn't it wonderful! Just like everyone else, my family chooses the Fort over ANY hotel. The activities, the natural beauty, the peasefulness, the friendly campers, just so much more fun than some hotel. Well, you know!:goodvibes

Alright MISSY,,beings how your a first timer,,I'll let it slip this time,,but next time I'll need to see pics of your fishing !(unless you took pics this trip, then I'll be happy to review them for you now :thumbsup2)

:thumbsup2 It must be something with the military... too many field excercises maybe. The problem is, my kids are each 11 years apart and it's an experience I feel like all kids should have. I know each of mine has really wanted to camp and camping teaches kids so many things that we might often overlook.

While I know things can go wrong anywhere, I think campgrounds have a more social, trusting feel to them - just a different atmosphere. I grew up in that atmosphere and want my kids to have those memories too. DS31 did with his dad but by the time DD19 and DD8 came along DH had discovered concierge lounges and valet parking. Not that I don't like those things mind you, just that when the girls beg to go camping I'm ready to do without the elevator key card and those pastries at the end of the hall to have some good old family fun.

Okay, I'll confess... I really like driving the golf carts around too!:rolleyes1
