We were there from 8/25-9/1. Below is the review I wrote for Trip Advisor.

I really wanted to give Aulani 3.5 stars but that was not a choice (so I gave 4 out of 5). Our family stayed at Aulani at the end of August, our last stop on a three island/three week trip to Hawaii. This followed stays on Big Island and Maui at high end, low density condos. Aulani couldn't have been more different. It is extremely high density.

We are Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members, so we are used to the crowds at Disney World parks and resorts. Aulani was similar. I expected by the end of August some of the crowds would have cleared out. Not so. There were many Japanese families staying there at the beginning of our stay, and then even more guests (mostly local Hawaiians) arrived for Labor Day weekend. By the time we left (Sunday of Labor day weekend), the place was packed.

Pros: The resort itself is beautiful and the attention to detail in the design is everywhere you look. The rooms are comfortable and well designed as we have come to expect from DVC. We stayed in a two bedroom ocean view villa on the 10th floor and my in laws were in a studio pool view on the 5th floor. The higher floors offer the best views and the most peace. (The lobby is on the 3rd floor so if you get a room on 3, be prepared for lots of foot traffic.) I really enjoyed the view and would definitely book an ocean view unit again. To me, it was worth the extra points. The beach is terrific and usually not crowded if you arrive in the morning. We were able to find chairs with an umbrella every day as long as we got there in the morning. The beach hut offers activities such as volleyball, ping pong, boogie board and sand toy rentals, all complimentary. There are also for fee rentals such as kayaks and SUPs. The lazy river, slides and pools are really nice IF you go first thing in the morning or very late afternoon into the evening. We would set up at the beach each day and the kids would go back and forth between the pools and beach. The kids enjoyed using the community center to rent complimentary DVDs each evening and do the menehune scavenger hunt. It was nice that the kids (almost 13 and 10) could enjoy some freedoms while the adults relaxed on the beach.

CONS: Aulani is just too crowded. The pool area is not at all relaxing. It is impossible to find a chair except for very early morning or late afternoon and evening. (Fortunately, we prefer the beach anyway.) There are often lines for rafts for the lazy river and slide. The adult infinity pool is the size of a large hot tub. We would get towels the night before and stake out our beach chairs early the next morning. Enjoying Aulani requires a Disney World touring plan style mindset. The other major con we encountered is an easy fix. There simply are not enough quick, casual family dining options after 5 or 6 pm. All the quick, casual eateries close or become bars at 5 or 6, with the exception of Ulu Cafe which has a limited menu. One evening at 6:10 pm I wandered around looking for a hamburger or hot dog to bring back to the room for my son and could not find one anywhere. Off the Hook, the poolside grill, should not turn into a bar in the evening. It should continue to offer casual, family dining until at least 8 pm. The character breakfast is overpriced and features only three characters (Mickey at check in and Goofy & Minnie coming by tables) and NO Stitch.

Despite these cons, we had a really nice time and would return to Aulani using our DVC points as long as we come prepared with a touring plan style mind set.

I agree the most part with your review especially about limited food choices in the evening. Too bad you left had to leave when you did since after Labour Day, the crowds left. We were there from the Thursday night ( 29th) until this past Thursday evening as we had a late flight. From Tuesday on, it was totally different. It was so quiet and we had no problems with finding seats. No crowds what so ever. You would have been amazed at the difference.

I'm quite glad you were willing to give it lower than a 5. I thought maybe my family was a little crazy as I didn't get completely blown away as people before us. I also don't feel it can't be matched as our Maui hotel after we left Aulani was awesome and the view breathtaking!

I thought ulu was great for a counter service. Maybe they can a add a grill for burgers and fries from 6 to close and maybe close at 11.

It would be nice to have a more normally priced sit-down dinner option or more economical and better buffet.

The resort was too crowded. They need many more umbrellas at the pool and a better "policing" system. I also thought they could do more adult friendly free activities such as crafts.

Thought dvc could have more mingles and give aways ie on DCL.

Although we are older, we were very disappointed in the lack of characters during the day and especially at the character breakfast. Only 2 walk around and no "handlers" so you can't take a family shot.

It was impressive to drive up to and walk around. Loved our unit and lanai/pool view. All the staff in every area of the resort were so friendly and accommodating.

All in all great resort and wonderful part of Oahu we hadn't seen!

I'm sure it was very quiet after Labor Day. Unfortunately, with the ages my kids are (7th and 4th grade), we travel during school breaks which are peak times. We will never be traveling in low season and always have to learn how to manage crowds. My kids had to get back to school on 9/3. I had thought by pushing our Aulani trip to the very end of August we would miss some of the madness. WRONG! I certainly did not expect an empty resort but it was far more crowded than I could ever have imagined. We also had just come from two very low density condos in Hawaii (Kolea) and Maui (Wailea Beach Villas) so the contrast was dramatic. We still really enjoyed it once we learned our "strategy." We would return since we are DVC members but I honestly would never pay the cash rates they charge to stay there. There are much higher end options for less money on the Hawaiian Islands.

Our trip overlapped lovetotraveltx by a day - we came as she was leaving...VERY crowded but we still loved it. Our resort on Maui after Aulani was a step down. Our biggest complaint was also the lack of affordable casual dining after 5:00. Although we enjoyed Makahiki it WAS overpriced. Totally agree that Off The Hook should keep their menu until closing. We will definitely return one day.

We've been owners at the Marriott Ko Olina for several years, and next year will be my kids' 8th trip back.

We walked around Aulani last year, and I understand about the crowding. It is a beautiful resort, but it felt like Disney really tried to cram as many rooms into the resort as possible. The pool seemed like it would be very crowded, not to our liking in Hawaii (where we go to the pool to read and relax, swim a bit, bring our little cooler down for drinks and snacks). We couldn't wait to walk back over to our Marriott - it is much quieter and more spread out.

We've rented many times at Disney at the Boardwalk villas, and understand they are much smaller inside than Marriott ones. That doesn't bother us - we're not in the room as much at Disneyorld as we are in Hawaii! It's still great to have a kitchen and washer/dryer at Disney - much better than a room!

We tend to cook a LOT in Hawaii - grill lunch and dinner often. The many grills are great gathering spots where I always meet nice families from around the world. So dining options for dinner don't affect us. We eat lunch out a few times when we're out in Kailua, Waikiki, or Kapolei. You can go over to the Marriott to eat from Aulani, but honestly we're not fond of our choices either! Longboard's used to be an "okay" spot but we didn't even eat there or anywhere at the Marriott last trip. Overpriced drinks don't thrill me when I can bring my wine or beer down to the pool with me (of course no glass).

Thanks for your review.

We did dine off property or in room also. One evening we walked over to the Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club timeshare for dinner at Longboards. We loved that they offered casual, inexpensive, beachfront dining but found the food to be pretty lousy. The lack of crowds at the Marriott timeshare vs. Aulani was dramatic. The Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club looked like a nice property and a good alternative to Aulani if paying cash. I think it costs about half the price and was much less crowded. One thing missing at the Marriott timeshare was shade at the beach. We did appreciate that Aulani provides beach umbrellas.

The lack of beach umbrellas has been mentioned before! Nice that Aulani has them. I don't know how much the cabanas rent for, but we tend to lay by the pool under umbrellas - if we're at the beach it isn't all day.

I agree, Longboard's is pretty lousy food. That's why we just avoided it last trip (and will next year too). It's a shame since it's a nice spot overlooking the beach to have such crappy food.

At least Aulani has a little snack shack, doesn't it? We just have the marketplace for grab & go items, but they're overpriced and not much selection so we just grab an occasional drink there.

Do they have Dole Whips at Aulani?

Walked along the beach path to Ko Alina to take some pics for our BIL who is a Marriott timeshare owner. Went back twice in the evening for Chucks Steakhouse. Enjoyed our meals, very nice servers, great outside patio eating area, and our family really enjoyed the fresh soup and salad bar!:thumbsup2
In my research, read some negative reviews about Longboards, so decided against it! From what we saw of Ko Alina, looked very nice!:)
