Yeah, unfortunately both grandmas live out of state, one in NJ and the other in New Orleans, while we're in DC. Actually, no one from either family lives near us so that means when we do go out (which we haven't done yet, other than a visit to NJ when we left her with my mom and MIL, who was also visiting) we'll have to pay someone. As far as what I expect, right now nothing other than holding my daughter who hates to be put down for longer than 2 minutes. If the kitchen (or any other room) is dirty, that's fine, and if her toys are out, that's fine too. I would typically clean up any food mess made while I was babysitting, and put away any toys the kids forgot about when they went to bed, but again, not a huge deal to me. I also had to bathe the kids before bed in most cases. SInce my daughter is so young, I feel the fewer the tasks the babysitter has to do the better, since right now my daughter needs lots of attention.
Another expense I forgot about. When I would babysit during a mealtime, the parents would leave takeout menus and $20 for me to order whatever I wanted for dinner. They'd also offer anything in the house, but if I didn't like the selection then I was free to order in. Living in DC makes that easy since practically every restaurant will deliver food. I only orderd pizza once when the kids wanted i too (parents said to order them whatever they wanted, separate from mine if I wanted something else), but many people I worked with at the day care who also babysat would never order food or order something very small and then keep the remainder of the money leftover. This money is in addition to the hourly rate.
