Not sure what to do...

I'm in a book club with 6 women. One is pregnant, so we decided at our next book club meeting, we'd go in and get her a gift, about $20 per person.

Today I got a shower invite for the pregnant member, being held a few weeks after our meeting. It's being organized by two other members of the book club - they were all good friends before the group got together, so it makes sense that they'd have a shower for her.

Don't know what to do. I really like all of these girls, but I don't have the $$ to buy two gifts. Should I decline, or go, but say that my gift was given at the book club?? That seems kind of tacky to me. What to do, what to do? :confused3

You really only need to go to one shower. ::yes::

Or, you could get two smaller gifts. There are some really nice, but not expensive baby items that are available.

You can always decline the larger shower, and just do the bookclub thing.

I would probably go to both, throw in $$ for the bookclub gift, and then get a small gift for the shower. Kmart.com has Disney clothes 60% off, and they have some adorable newborn Disney outfits for around $7-$8! You can always get inexpensive baby clothes at Kohls too!

You could get a nice gift for the book club and a pack of diapers and a cheap outfit for the other party or vise versa. Every new mom needs a pack of diapers and there not super expensive either.

If you want to go to the actually baby shower, I would go and just bring a very small gift. Books can be really inexpensive and are always appreciated. I've gotten great Sesame Street books in the dollar section at Target.

I had the exact same situation last month for a girl in my book club. I wound up getting her a babyish book with a matching toy for one shower. For the book club shower, B&N has really nice hardcover editions of classics for a great price so I bought her two (Secret Garden and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) for her to read aloud to her daughter as she gets older.
I can't remember how much I spent exactly, but it was less than $30 for everything.

I think you should pitch in for the bookclub shower AND go to the "official" one. Like others have mentioned, Wal Mart, TJ Maxx, etc have cheap baby clothes.

Or you could always get her what every new mother needs: diapers! They're a good price for gift giving.

Good luck!
