Exactly this. You will probably never see the mother go to the nest yourself. They are very sneaky and only visit the nest 1-2 times each day to help keep predators from discovering the location of the nest.
Why would you need to do anything? They're wild animals. Leave them alone. Baby rabbits are actually independent pretty quickly. If their eyes are open they are probably pretty much on their own already. Here's one of many links about baby bunnies:http://www.2ndchance.info/bunnies.htm
Make sure the window wells to your house are covered.
I found a baby bunny trapped in the window well a few years ago. It was a new house. Luckily when I lowered a laundry basket the bunny understood. He hopped in. I raised the basket. He went on his way. Also known as bunny rescue 911. Yes we installed window well covers following our bunny rescue operation.
Other than that type of situation I never intervene with nature.
We had a nest last year. The only thing we did was leave the lawn in back a bit longer to provide cover from the predator birds.
I was going to say the same thing. We had one a few years ago, whenever I let the dogs out I would always stand over the nest, and shoe them (the dogs) away with a rake. Mama will visit the nest early morning, late evening and in a few weeks they will hop out and begin their new bunny lives!
Rabbits are quite remarkable, they are born with all of their instincts, all mom has to do is feed them and let em go. Too bad human kids aren't as easy!
Years ago we had one in a rock garden outside our back door. Oddly enough, one climbed in my dryer vent and dyed. Oh, the smell. What I didn't know was that wild rabbits almost always carry fleas. The fleas got on my clothes, and thus, in my house, found a host on my indoor cat and I had quite an infestation.
Unfortunately, a neighborhood dog or cat must have found them and we came home one day to the carnage all over the driveway. It was awful.
I had a bunny nest in my front yard a few yrs ago. Discovered them while cutting grass, mine was maybe a week old. The next day momma was found on the road a very sad road kill victim. My babies did not make it.
I thought about trying to raise them myself but wild baby bunnies are hard to hand raise an I knew I was going to be leaving home for a couple weeks in just a couple of days so did not even try to give them a hand.
It's a every spring thing around here. My PITA neighbors claimed I had snakes and bunnies in my grass that didn't get mowed for awhile one yr. I was like there is bunnies every yr and I've seen no signs of snakes and if there is so be it they eat bugs.
since than our other neighbors and I refer to them as my killer bunnies, still have not seen my snakes 3 yrs later. I would like to do something about there noisy PITA chickens and rooster but I'll let country life be country life.
We had bunnies a couple of months ago. If you can easily tell they are bunnies' they are probably older than you think. Ours looked like mice for at least the first week. The mommy mad e the nest in my sons playhouse, and then it got moved when we mowed. I didn't discover them until my dog grabbed one. It was unharmed and I moved it back, taking my dog out on the leash after that. We moved the house back and went to disney. When we came back we started letting the dog back in the yard off leash and all was fine until the bunnies got big enough to hop out of the playhouse. Our dog got one before I figured it all out. The momma moved the rest that day.
Do NOT mow the lawn over their bunny hole. Accidentally did that a year ago and bleeerrrggghhh it haunts me still. I ran in the house and made my husband come home from work to deal with it.
Other than that, just leave them alone, they'll leave the nest.
I'm glad you saw them before you mowed - I ran over a nest a few years ago that I had no idea was there and I cried for hours. One was killed but the rest stayed low. I now walk every inch of the yard before I mow.
I hope it never happens again . I even caught a 4.5" snake and released it in the woods just last week - I don't want to kill anything, ever.
