Baby formula through security...

Is this new - or brand specific? I always used powder with my dd's and mixed up at least a quart at a time and then poured bottles as needed. In fact IIRC the can has measurement instructions by the quart and the gallon?

If I were the OP I would premix enough for the trip plus a few, pour into bottles and use a cooler and an ice pack to keep them cold. This way there is no issue as to water at all. I would also bring extra powder just in case and then have nursery water delivered via a grocery service.

Alternately if the water is in baby bottles rather than water bottles your chances of it clearing security is better. Then you can add the powder as needed.

Once the powder is mixed with water, it needs to be refrigerated to be good for 24 hours. If kept at room temperature, it's only good 2 hours but my pediatrician recommended not going over 1 hour if I could avoid it.

Like I said in my OP, Lucas is very sensitive to any change in his feeding so I'm trying to keep as much as I can consistent.

I plan to ask his pediatrician for a note to help me carry Nursery Water through security. I *hope* that since I am flying out of a small airport (CRW), I won't have issues. I'll arrive in plenty of time that if I do encounter problems, I'll just take the water back to the car and we'll buy bottled on the other side.

I'm sorry, but the PP who said the TSA agent opened two bottles.. no way! Those things are $2 a piece. My son already drinks 6oz a sitting (can drink 8, but we don't let him) so that stuff is liquid gold to me. That would not fly with me.
Another reason I'm doubting I want to take the pre-made!

I guess I am just not getting something here. You could pre mix your formula with the nursery water same way you are now and if kept cold they would be fine right? The TSA allows formula as well as ice packs to keep it cold but the sketchy part is the water. So IMHO having the formula he tolerates already mixed would be the best case senario.

I travel often, at least once a month which means clearing security at least twice a month :( I see the inconsistancy - since it isn't addressed specificly on the rules you would have a hard time getting it through if the agent decides it isn't allowed.

The TSA agents are also not supposed open or ask you or your child to taste the formula. They are allowed to "inspect' it and they do have a test they can do without opening it if they think its necessary.

Here is the link to the TSA website-

I am not trying to be argumentative hopefully maybe even helpful :)

For me, making a few bottles of formula the way he likes it would be easiest - esp since formula is allowed? I wouldn't take a chance on having to ditch the nursery water and use bottled water unless you have success with it prior to the trip.

He has issues with any inconsistency in his feedings. He's not used to cold formula, I'd have no way to warm it on the plane [and even if I did, he's not used to warm formula- he's used to room temperature].
I'm also not comfortable with the idea that the ice packs would keep it cool enough to not spoil the formula, I guess. Like I said, any inconsistency causes issues with him. I don't know what it is, but he is extremely sensitive... :confused3

We go to the pediatrician on the 17th and I plan to ask for a note to take with me through security. He is well informed of Lucas' feeding issues, as we were almost not discharged from the hospital on time because of them. He almost kept us there. :headache:

I recently discovered Nursery Water makes individual bottles-- I'm planning on searching around here locally for them and taking those with us. We'll arrive to CRW in enough time to deal with TSA and if I get an agent not following policy, I'll ask to speak to a supervisor.
I'm not sure what else I can do... other than go in armed with a note from the pediatrician and the least suspect baby feeding items I can think of. :confused3

I have a big Lukus 11yrs next Sunday, your little Lucas is so cute, anyway, I would take plenty of formula on the flight any type of delays could happen. Last weekend we were flying back from Vegas the family ahead of us in the security line had a baby and 10 baby bottles of water one was formula being tested. This stopped the the line but I didn't mind and waited (the baby needs to eat).:thumbsup2 All will be well.:)

The flight attendants will give you water to warm the formula up in. If you dunk a cold bottle into hot water, it will reach room temperature pretty quickly, especially if you swish it around while it's warming.

The ice packs work just great...I used them when we traveled and was very concerned about the loss of my breastmilk (I worked hard for it...wasn't going to waste it :) ) and it stayed nice and cold for the duration of our trip, which was about six hours door to door.

I guess if you aren't comfortable with trying anything other than traveling with dry formula powder and bottles of nursery water, you'll just have to take your chances. Either you'll get the water through security or you won't. Worst case scenario is you'd have to buy bottled water from an airport concession.

The ice packs may be great. But if a screener says you cannot take the ice packs on the plane, you are stuck.

I have read a couple of stories regarding this. The supervisors were called and backed up the screener. They were obviously wrong in not allowing the ice packs but it doesn't help the passenger at that point. The breastmilk spoiled.

Lucas was a big boy at birth (9lbs 5 oz) and his pediatrician told me to plan to start him on solids at 4 months. He said we might need to re-evaluate, of course, but we talked about it briefly because I plan to make my own baby food. I asked because I would like to make a few batches a few weeks before he actually starts eating solids. See how good I am at it and get some practice in.

Anyway, Lucas isn't even 2 months old yet and already drinking 8oz of formula at a feeding soooo... I figure we'll be sticking to the original plan of introducing limited solids at 4months. I see the pediatrician in a few weeks, though, so I figure we will discuss it further at that time.

I believe that the Similac come in 2oz bottles and 8oz bottles. We use the Playtex Drop In bottles and the nipples do not fit on those little ready-to-feed bottles. They are much, much bigger. Maybe I need to browse the baby aisle more carefully. I didn't realize nipples came in more than one size. I'm still using what came in the Drop Ins starter kits, I haven't had to buy anything extra other than liners.
That would definitely be worth purchasing for the flights at the very least. I know I will probably get more tolerant TSA agents in Charleston than I will in Orlando.. just due to the sheer amount of people they have got to deal with. I'll check it out. Thanks!! :thumbsup2

Just bring the 8oz ready to feed bottles and transfer the formula into your playtex nurser when you're ready to feed. Yes you're carrying more stuff but if that's the only nipple your LO likes then I'd just deal with the extra stuff..

Oh, he's not picky with nipples.

I was just saying that the nipples that come with his bottles don't fit those bottles-- I just assumed all the nipples were the same size as what I have.

I've since gone and looked and noticed that yes, there are smaller ones out there that fit those ready-to-feed bottles. I'm new to this mom thing. Didn't know nipples came in two sizes. :rotfl:

Oh you're in for it LOL nipples come in a million different varieties(and sizes) for all the different bottles out there.:lmao:

This is what I'm planning on doing. Just for my own curiosity (as I do use ready made at home and have to heat it up in hot h20) The container I have to put formula in to heat is big. I don't think I'd be able to get one as big on the plane...would they have something other than standard size cup?? reason I ask, my son takes 8 oz at at time and I know picey's son does as well. I actually lie my sons formula on it's side in a pampered chef 4 cup measurer to heat it up the quickest and it takes time and that is w/4 cups of h20 around it and hot running h20 over it.

I saw that the ready made are now small bottles vs cans...when I had my 2nd, they were still metal cans. Picey, can you try him w/a few of these and see how he does?? It's about $10 for 6 8 oz bottoles around here. I am just going to dump it into my drop ins (same bottles).

I think I am going to try the ready made but have powder on hand with the Nursery Water, too.

Maybe I'll let them pick :rotfl:
