I'm considering packing jarred baby food for YDS rather than having be part of our GG delivery, mainly due to selection. Have any of you put jars of baby food in your checked luggage. Even though I'd put all of it in zip bags, I'm still afraid of it bursting and being a waste. Is this a rational fear, or will the pressure not have any effect on the jars?

TIA

Pressure shouldn't be a problem, but baggage handling could be. Pack them well in a plastic container.

we packed ours in diapers (2 for added cushioning) and then a zip lock bag. nothing broke but if it had, we probably would have been ok. we also packed pasta sauce, etc. in the same way. :) good luck!

I would definitely try to find some baby food that comes in a plastic jar or bottle. I figure there must be some that does! There is not an issue with pressure that would cause damage to the the jars, but they could be broken while the bags are being handled. If you do need to settle for glass jars, I would wrap them individually in a piece of clothing or bubble wrap, or another material that would protect the jars from being broken to keep them safe, and put them inside of ziplock bags to keep them contained. I would then pack the bags with the jars in the middle of the suitcase with clothes on top of and underneath to keep them protected. I would also suggest writing "Baby food - breakable jars" on the outside of the bags in case TSA inspects your luggage (which they do at random).

posted on another travel board, from a regular who flies transatlantic frequently. She said this works, she's never had a jar 'explode', and only one broke, one time:

-tape the lid down

-wrap in plastic, celophane and then put in a ziplock. You may want to put them in individual ziplocks if you prefer.

-place in the luggage surrounded by soft items.

Also, don't put all your jarred food in one suitcase. Remember that the weight limits are per bag, not per person. If you go over the limit for a bag, the airline will charge you the overweight bag fee.

Why no use wegoshop.com? We used them when we took our 8.5 month old DD last Fall and they brought us the exact brand and types of food we wanted. You specify what you want and if Marge can't find it on the shelves, she'll call you to ask about a substitute.

If you do decide to pack your own food, don't put it all in one suitcase because if that suitcase gets lost, you won't have any food with you. Same goes for clothing. Don't put all of one person's clothing in one suitcase, instead, put a little of everyones in each suitcase.
