Baby clothes laundry question

Thank you all so much!! And thank you for not thinking I am an idiot Lol:blush:

I purchased Dreft and before I read all of these replies, I used fragrance free hypo-allergenic fabric softener sheets. Do you think thats ok?

So I can wash everything together in cold, huh? Wow, that makes things much easier!

You guys noted except for reds. What about dark purples or blacks or hot pinks? Can those be washed together with whiter or lighter clothing?

Yes, most of the clothes I received were hand me downs. There were. Few outfits that were new though-tags still on them.

Should I wash new clothing differently?

Last question-what about tights? Can I wash those in the machine or should I handwash?

Thank you again!!!:goodvibes

I've always read that the reason you avoid fabric softener in baby clothes is that they are treated to be flame retardant and the fabric softener can remove that treatment. I'm not sure if that's only for pyjamas, or for all clothing.

Everything but reds (solid) washed together in cold water with Dreft. Worked with my kids and now my daughters are doing the same.

Yikes-that is good to know-thank you! I think I will skip the fabric softener for now on.

Thank you. I ended up doing my first load on gentle cycle but warm water-before I read these replies and I was following what the clothing labels said-I hope I didnt cause any of the clothes to shrink.....

Thank you all so much!!! You have all been really helpful :worship:

I'm off to buy a lingerie bag today for her socks and tights (just in case I brave her wearing tights-she will be born at the end of September though, so I'm expecting chilly months ahead of her).

Skip the tights and have her wear leggings and socks. Much easier for everyone. ;) Unless of course it's a fancy dress or something leggings wouldn't be appropriate for. LOL

Yep - Tights pretty much suck. ;)

When my ds was a baby, I used to trade babysitting with another mom so we could volunteer at school with our older kids. She woud always dress her dd in the cable knit tights. It really was a pain to do a diaper change with tights. My dd always wore leggings unless she needed to look dressy.

I would agree with washing everything together in cold water except for reds. Reds should be separate because they do bleed for a few washings.

The hand me down clothing shouldn't be as much of a worry with bleeding because their bleeding of color is probably done since they're not new and presumably have been washed a number of times already.

The idea about the stain stick near where you change the baby is a great idea.

Washing clothes once in warm water shouldn't cause an inordinate amount of shrinkage. I wouldn't worry about it.

Heck, you'll be too busy to even bother putting her in tights! :) Changing a squirmy baby is tough enough without trying to take tights on and off, too! Regarding your laundry question, I washed all my baby's clothes in cold with a free/clear detergent and dried on low or hung to dry. For the first washing of new stuff, I separated light from dark, but now, everything goes together on cold (except for red, which I do with darks). I wash all of her clothes with mine.

Oh, a tip I got that has been fabulous: put baby socks in a lingerie bag to wash! It really saves on sock-hunting! I also keep a stain stick in the diaper bag and one near the changing table. Makes it much easier to pretreat a stain if you do it when you're changing clothes anyway.

I was going to say the same thing. I had all these wonderful ideas about how I would dress my DD. Tights, forget it, they squirm too much. Dresses, those little babies have a horrible time crawling in dresses. We watched all those little ones struggle in church.

Anyway, OP congrats and don't worry, you will do fine.

i wash everything together on gentle with Tide Free & Clear. if i have something super dark, i'll put it with our dark, gentle items.

You guys are really great-I appreciate all of this advice!:)

Which brand stain stick do you recommend? Tide?

Here's what I do with my daughter's clothes and I have done this since her very first load of laundry. I was all of the baby stuff together (yeap, whites, darks, colors, whatever) and I always use cold water on the gentle cycle and a gentle detergent. I haven't had a problem with any clothes fading, bleeding, stretching, or shrinking yet.

That's what I'm doing with my son. So far so good!

Congrats to you:cloud9:
