Baby Carrier for older infant

My 7 month old daughter is on the chubby side and reaching the upper weight limit for the baby bjorn. Does anyone know of a baby carrier that dh and I can both use that has a higher weight limit? We travel fairly often so we think we should buy one for when a stroller is inconvenient.

How about one of those hip carriers? I have one I haven't used yet so I need to make sure, but our DD might really enjoy sitting on our hip for some of the afternoon. She'll get tired quick of the stroller, methinks!

There is a whole world of baby carriers out there! Check out www.thebabywearer.com for a ton of great info.

At that age I would recommend either a mei tai (www.kozycarrier.com, www.babyhawk.com) or a soft structured carrier like the Ergo, Beco, Patapum, etc. They are great carriers, far more comfy than a baby bjorn.

I really liked the Ergo and I think it was easy for me, my husband, my mom--whomever wanted to--to wear ds, and he LOVED being worn!!! I had a mei tei, but I felt like I always had to readjust it and that was a pain.
But the previous poster is so right, there are many fine choices out there.

My favorite is a pouch sling. The babywearer website has tons of companies that sell them. I still use mine on occassion and my younger son is 2.5 and close to 30 pounds. You can wear the baby in front, in back or on the hip with a pouch and it is so easy to get on and off. I think that hotslings (a cotton pouch) are now being sold at Target and babies r us.

I forgot about the pouch!!! I loved my hybrid pouch--a cross between a pouch and a sling. It was great for stuffing in the bag in case I needed it, the versatility was wonderful, too. I got mine from wisewomansling(dot)com. The problem w/a standard pouch is that it's really more fitted, so if you and your husband both want to use it, you really need to be about the same size.
Gosh, I really hope I get to use my carriers again!!!

A pouch would be great for short-term hip carries. If it's going to be any longer than that, I'd definitely recommend an Ergo. I've found it to be much more comfortable over longer periods than my wrap or mei tai (which I actually don't like much at all).

Another vote for the Ergo. If you're coming from the Baby Bjorn, you'll be used to a structured carrier like the Ergo. There's no comparison between the Baby Bjorn and the Ergo in terms of comfort. The Ergo is so much comfier for you and for baby. As baby gets bigger, you'll love being able to wear her on your back in the Ergo. DS is 3 1/2 and still loves to be worn that way when we're out on long daytrips. We don't bring the stroller with us - just the Ergo- and when he gets sleepy, he climbs on one of our backs and has a rest.

A little note for those used to Bjorns. The Ergo can be worn on your front, but baby faces you. Personally (and professionally as a retired chiropractor) I think that is best, but for Bjorn users it's different, since most people wear babies facing out in those. Just know it's better for their hips, and they can interact with people behind you just as well as in front of you, and they get a broad view of what you've passed (think about sitting facing forward on a train vs the bigger view you get while facing backwards).

Or move 'em to the back once their heads are under control.

Thanks for the link! I noticed that the Ergo is sold though multiple chiropractors in my city. That says a lot to me about the product's comfort and safety. I'm going to take DH and DD to try one out on Monday.

Definitely go with the Ergo. Super comfy. Both DH and I wear our kids in them. DH carrier our almost 3 year old in them last May. We decided not to use it for him this time because he will be 3.5 and we have a few other adults going with us. So I am selling that one and keeping my other one for our younger DS.

BTW Baby Bjorns are NOT good for baby's spine. We actually call them "crotch danglers" They just do not provide the necessary support for them. In an Ergo they will be in a sitting position rather than a hanging position.

Just got mine this week and have already used it at Ikea, a parade and to do some packing for our upcoming move. I have a 20 month old DD. I used to been in a lot of pain when I used the frame backpack carrier we had with our two older girls. I am so thrilled with the comfort level! My husband was skeptical because I am always after new baby equipment but even he agreed that it was more comfortable than the Bjorn or the backpack. DD even went back to sleep at Ikea. People also have complimented me on the colors and how comfy she looks.

I also love my Ergo. I have a large baby for her age and wear her on my back now (15 months, have since 12 months) and can hardly feel her there. She loves it too. It's amazing how quick you get used to slinging them back there!

i vote for hip hugger. My 8 month old is a big boy and he does great in the hip hugger.

Definitely an Ergo for an older baby. We have one and love it! We wouldnt use any other baby carrier.
