An infant born with four legs, three hands, three kidneys and an abnormal liver to a rural Zambian woman two weeks ago, is pictured in Lusaka, July 2, 2003. Zambian baby born with four legs and three hands

LUSAKA - A Zambian woman has given birth to a baby girl with four legs and three hands, according to a senior doctor.

University Teaching Hospital (UTH) pediatric consultant surgeon Lupando Munkonge said the as-yet unnamed baby also had three kidneys and an abnormal liver, but the baby's condition was stable and her mother was in good health.

"We have a baby that was born with abnormal features... doctors will first remove the extra external features before removing the extra kidney," Munkonge told reporters.

Munkonge said the baby's deformities were caused by the incomplete growth of another foetus and a multiplication of cells that would normally have resulted in the birth of Siamese twins.

The mortality rate among babies with such severe deformities is high, especially in highly impoverished countries like Zambia where access to health services is poor.

The baby's mother said she gave birth to the baby girl two weeks ago in Choma, 300km south of the capital Lusaka.
