We'll be at the World this June and I was planning on taking our baby bjorn carrier for our 7 month old DD. But, I've read a lot of recommendations for the maya wrap sling.

DD loves the bjorn carrier but it does get a little warm here at home ( Hawaii ) and I know it will be warm in Orlando.

Does anyone use both and recommend one over the other?

Thanks for any advice!

We've taken the Bjorn and toted our youngest around WDW in it in August, whe he wasa 11mos old and then again the following May. It was great. I really dont think that WDW is the right place to try our new gear. If you have the Bjorn and are comfortable with it, the go and enjoy.

I don't think it was called a "maya wrap" when I used my sling 7 years ago for my 2nd son, but I think we're talking about the same thing. I had my baby in that for 2 visits -- once as a 3 mo old and then again as a 15 mo old. Not just from my WDW experience, but in general I loved my sling much more than the front carrier because I had use of my arms! they take a little getting used to for both mom and baby, but find someone who's had one (a La Leche League meeting is a good place, that's where I went for that reason alone!) and have her show you if you dont' already have it down. I found them better for nursing (easier to be discreet if you have a blanket) than the front carriers.

Have fun!

I use them both (or should say, have used them both because my dd is too big for the Bjorn now), and it is a hard choice. We did 2 trips with her in the Bjorn for most of the day in the parks and used the maya wrap for around the resort. If you plan on exclusively wearing your dd, I would take them both. It would be less stress on you or your partner because each carrier wears differently-you could give your shoulders a break from the Bjorn. How much does your dd weigh? When mine got around 20 pounds, the Bjorn was only good for short periods of time. She is now about 30 pounds and I am 6 months pregnant; I can still wear her in the maya for a couple of hours without a break!

Bringing both is a very good idea. I did this on our DCL cruise last summer, when DD was 5 1/2 months old. It was nice switching off, using different muscles. As much as I loved my Baby Bjorn, however, now when we go to WDW (at least once a month) I bring only my MayaWrap sling. I absolutely love it. It is so much more versatile. Also, now that DD is 20+ pounds, it so much more comfortable than the Baby Bjorn.

If you do a search, there are a few companies that make wraps similar to the Maya Wrap but made out of mesh. That would be my ideal sling. I would definitely try it out at home first to make sure she liked it, though.

Thank you all the replies!

DD is 4 months right now and already 15 lbs. but she does love her bjorn.

I'm going to look into the sling so more...I just have no experience with a sling so I'm a bit hesitant.

We'll also have family with us on this trip so there will be a lot of arms willing to carry her if she wants out of the bjorn. We are also bringing her stroller.

Thanks again

:D

Take your sling and your dd to a La Leche League meeting, and most likely, many of the mamas there will be able to help you with learning how to put it on. Also, I think if you order it directly from mayawrap.com, you can get a video with instructions. I would not recommend the mesh except for use in the water because it is not a breathable fabric, despite the holes. The cotton used for the maya is very thin although durable, and it breathes. I would suggest getting a light color choice too.

I have a very large 7 month old (22 pounds) and I recently purchased a great sling called the HipHugger. He's outgrown the front carriers and for me, the wraps were difficult to get him into (he's also 30" long). The HipHugger I ordered is a light canvas (since we'll be at WDW in a month, I too was concerned about something being hot) and is very simple to use and easily adjusts for the wearer. It creates a seat on your hip. I can carry him in it for up to two hours and he is happy and so are my arms! I can't remember the web site, but if you do a search for HipHugger sling through Yahoo shopping, you'll find it. To save you sticker shock though, it was $75 - about the cost of Bjorn carriers.

I'd be happy to answer any questions about it.

Check eBay or another auction site for a sling. You can save a lot of money that way, because they aren't cheap. Sometimes you can find them at consignment stores, too, but you have to be there at the right time to get one. Maybe you could call around to see if any in your area have one before you go on a wild goose chase all over town.

Other than the comfort/warmth issue, a sling has one plus over a front-carrier. On rides like Peter Pan, where there is a lap bar, a baby worn in front will block the bar, but one carried to the side will be just fine without taking him out.

DH and I used the Baby Bjorn in May of last year when DD was 10 mos. It was pretty warm, but she loved it and didn't get hot in it. I got mine on ebay for a reasonable price, and i'm sure you can get a sling online for a good price as well. Bringing both wouldn't be a bad idea at all. you can try them both out and see which one works best. Or maybe you might prefer one, and your husband the other. DH and I both really liked the baby bjorn the best. Good luck!

we took 3 slings and used them all, my back is not brilliant, and by changing slings I was able to carry her for longer. We still needed a stroller though, I couldn't carry her all day.

the maya wrap website has a video online, so if you buy a different brand you can still use their instructions (which is what I did...)

I also have a pouch sling which is briliant because it is so easy, but it's probably the least supportive. Great for in and out of the stroller though,

we used a Baby Bjorn on Peter Pan, but dd was only 3 months, may have been harder when she was bigger

My daughter, who will be three in a few weeks, LOVES her sling still- we've had it since she was a newborn, and there's no way I could have survived without it, because she always wanted to be carried. We have an Over the Shoulder Baby Holder, which is the padded kind, so a little comfier than the Maya Wrap, but also much bulkier. I debated buying a Maya Wrap when we went to Disneyworld in January, just because it would be easier to smush up into a bag to carry around, but I just brought the OTSBH, and it was a lifesaver on the lines - we kept it in the basket of the stroller when she wasn't in it walking around, and brought it with us to every ride because I didn't want to risk its getting lost or stolen, and almost every long line she was in it, and everyone around us holding small children looked at us with envy it seemed...I have no idea how people manage without them. We've never had a front carrier, so I can't compare them directly, but I have heard that they tend to be less comfortable than slings because they don't support the kid's legs, which then just dangle with pressure against the thighs. One thing about the sling is that kids can be in different positions in them, which might help if they're being carried around a lot.

I agree that if you have both already and don't mind bringing them, that's probably best, just to vary things a bit for both your comforts.

Thanks for all the great information!

I never thought of looking on ebay for a sling but I just may give it a try.

I never used either with my kids very much, so I don't have a personal opinion on it.

I did want to point out a different kind of carrier. Saw another mom at a store the other day. Asked her about her carrier as it was very unusual...she couldn't say enough nice things about it! It has several different ways to be worn and carry the child, is light enough that neither of you will get hot, and is completely adjustable for all of you! It's so unbulky that she wore hers under her jacket (it was still cold here last week) very comfortablly....baby was facing frontways so she just zipped her coat up that far and kept them both nice and warm. Was thinking if we ever needed a carrier, that this would be the one I'd get.... see what you think.

We went to WDW last Oct. with our then 5 1/2 mon old DD. I too went back and forth on what to take for her. Others on this site recommended the Maya Wrap, I looked into it and it looked great, but I had never used one and feared my daughter might be too old to get used to it. I ended up buying one, but decided to bring my baby bjorn too. We both LOVED the Maya Wrap, in fact I never even used the bjorn. The wrap was a lifesaver; she could sleep in it, nurse in it and look around...so many positions, plus it sheltered her better from the sun and heat than the bjorn would have. She ended up hating riding in the stroller and wanted to be carried the whole time, so I am so glad we had the wrap. I would recommend one to anyone!

momofbuzzfan:

You just convinced me to get a mayawrap :D

Sounds like my DD would love it! She too loves to be carried ( which baby doesn't :teeth: ) and the ease of sleep and nursing sounds great.

Just a note about wrap-secured sling carriers like the Ultimate Baby Wrap (or the Didymos, the Girasol, the Ellaroo or Moby). While this style is wonderful to use and easy on your back, it has two drawbacks for theme park use: 1) They usually have to be re-wrapped and secured every time you take the baby out of them, which means that baby-swapping is going to be a lot of bother, and 2) They cover most of one's upper body in several layers of fabric; which can be REALLY hot in the Florida climate.

Of this list, the one generally considered the coolest to wear is the Ellaroo. The average length of one of these slings is about 15 feet, and for a young baby, all but about 5 of it generally ends up wrapped around Mom.

I'm not recommending them above any other dealer, but this website http://store.yahoo.com/peppermintcom/babyslings.html offers a huge variety of sling types, w/ particularly good illustrations of all the various tying methods

I'm not personally familiar with any of these, but I just wanted to say that this does not apply to Maya Wrap slings. They are very easy to put on and adjust. DH and I switch back and forth easily in about 30 seconds (DH is a foot taller and 130 pounds heavier than I am). Just make sure you have time to learn how to use it and practice before your trip.

Also, I use mine all the time, and I live in FL, so I can assure you they are comfortable to use in the FL heat (but I would choose a lighter color.)
