Following the introduction of new hand baggage restrictions by the UK Department for Transport, the decision has been taken to delay the implementation of the checked and excess baggage policy.

The new policy, announced in June, was due to be implemented from October 11, 2006, but will now be launched when we are clearer on the longer-term plans for hand baggage restrictions for all airlines in the UK and around the world.

We believe it is prudent to delay the launch so that we can undertake a full review of the policy, in light of the UK government's restrictions on hand baggage. This will allow us to understand fully the implications for the changes we had planned for our checked baggage allowances and excess baggage charges.

We continue to work closely with the DfT and BAA to manage the implementation of the new hand baggage restrictions for customers departing UK airports and to ensure that we have a robust and sustainable long-term solution.

Remind me what checked and excess baggage policy was due to be impletmented in October please?

For US routes (since I assume we are talking US Disney on this board)...

Basically down to a ABSOLUTE max weight of 23kg per checked case/bag. Only two checked cases/bags per person. This applies to all classes WT/WT+/CW/F).

They have relented (due to the current security situation) and are sticking to 32kg per bag max... https://www.britishairways.com/travel/bagchk/public/en_gb

Ah - the policy that Virgin have already introduced - thank you :)

From an email I just received:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Boo Boo,

You may remember that a few weeks ago we let you know about some upcoming changes to our checked and excess baggage policy. As the restrictions on what can be carried onboard have tightened following the recent security alert, we have decided to delay the implementation of this new baggage policy.

The new cabin baggage restrictions have an impact on what must be checked in, so this delay will allow us to discuss a long-term solution with the Department for Transport and the BAA.

As a reminder, for flights from UK airports, cabin baggage is restricted to one bag measuring a maximum of 45cm x 35cm x 16cm. A full list of prohibited items can be found on http://www.ba.com.

For more information on your baggage allowances please visit ba.com http://www.britishairways.com/travel/bagchk/public/en_gb

We would like to thank all of our customers for their patience over the last few weeks and would like to reassure you that we are doing all that we can to ensure that you have a smooth journey through the airport.

Yours sincerely

British Airways

Not exactly as with VA in PE you can still have 2 x 32kg and UC is still 3 x 32kg.

we are Ok as we will still get the 32kgs x 2 as we booked before the 1st April, however what a shame for other passengers booked with Virgin, that they dont copy BA's idea.

Virgin and BA sometimes follow what each other does, Virgin MIGHT rethink (like BA) in the current security/carry-on circumstances... you never know.
