Just got off the phone with North West...and boy am I glad I called....

2 years ago I was a little hesitant to book online, but had been advised that I could find much better fares if I did...was able to locate an unreal fare at the exact times we wanted to fly with Delta...

This trip we have been plannign for several months now and arent going until Sept. I was sure that I would be able to locate a decent fare for the family this far in advance...right???, yeah....or so I thought...

I have shopped online at every ticket site & carrier page available...no one was giving anything for a decent rate or decent times...until I found out the neighbors across the street are flying NW 2 weeks before we are...and were able to get a family of 4 for $600!

I made a call to NW & sure enough....they are running a companion special where the 2nd party flies for just the tax (as the airline employees do)...

We were able to fly a family of 4 from Detroit to Orlando for a total of $136PP at the times we wanted (7am flight out...730pm flight return, NON STOP!) which comes to $546.00 total!

Now here is the catcher...to get the flight there has to be an even number of passangers...and we have 5 flying...the cheapest I could get a ticket for my 8 year old son was $270.50 (incl. tax) but if you average the total ($826.50) and divide by 5 it comes to $163.30ea!!

Sorry for the long post as I am a little excited and hope that the information may be able to help out others in saving some green...I can almost taste the Tonga Toast at the Poly when we arrive........

Patience paid off!!

Good luck

Dan

P.S.
From what I see the airlines are not really offering any better fares online...unless you just happen to catch that special "cyber" fare or what they are callin it....:bounce: :bounce:

We too are going in September. I had been fortunate to book tix using frequent flier miles for me and DH, but the return flight was connecting and had to be first class. With this deal, I was able to get two non-stop flights, and our flight there is the same as before. Prices were $136 each!!!! I do have to pay a fee to re-deposit the frequent flier miles, but I still end up with two non-stop round-trip tickets for less than $200 each.

Thank you so much!:D

You got a great deal - especially for non-stop flights! Congratulations. Wish I could find something like that out of Minneapolis for an August trip.

We recently got tickets on ATA out of Chicago for June/July for 135.00 per person round trip but with no restrictions on the number of passengers. I think the airlines are doing this to counter Southwest's 'Friends Fly Free' fares. I called the airline directly before I booked just to double check, and they didn't have access to the lower fares. Internet only fares..

It is amazing what you can find by doing a little research. Congratulations on your find and enjoy your trip!

Where can I find the NW airlines website? Everything I try pops up with a different window. Thanks for your help.
Stephanie

Thanks Sgt Disney! Axelf63 Did you say you had to call to get this fare, I looked on the site and didn't see the campanion fare listed. What are the dates in september that you are traveling? I am also going in september, and have been looking for a good deal.
Thanks,
Stephanie

It may depend on the days that you are selecing. I was able to find the fares on their website just now. Just for fun, I put in 9/3 and 9/10 as a return to MCO from DTW. The fare comes up at 136.50 each for 2 passengers. Make sure you put in an even number of passengers, if you put in 3 or 5 the fares are being quoted as 246.50 for each one.

I as well am flying northwest out of detroit, only in july. I just got my membership here and this was going to be my first topic! I can't believe the rates from northwest right now! My wife and I are flying nonstop out of detroit to orlando for $280 total! amazing deal. for those who want to really fly well, northwest is offering first class tickets nonstop to orlando from detroit for around $775 apiece. that is another amazing price considering normal first class seats would run more than twice that apiece.

I also would note that I probably never would have discovered this rate had I not first used http://www.orbitz.com which showed me the cheap $136 a ticket fare. I like to look at those sites to find my flights and then go directly to the airline website to save on service charges. (i know, i know, just call mr. cheapskate!!) ;)

anyways, i highly recommend using orbitz to find the low fares out there.

great website and i look forward to posting more!!

Roha,

I do the same as you , go to Orbitz first, then see who has the cheapest fares to Orlando for my dates. Then go directly to the Airlines website to get the tickets.:D

The fare you are talking about is the

Family & Friends Fare: 35% off Every Day fares when you travel with a family member or friend. 14-day advance purchase required, 30-day maximum stay, including a Saturday-night, and no Sunday travel. It's the best way to save.

Sloneta...looks like we are neighbors!!!

Amazing..."It's a small world after all..."

Stepherella,
Yes, I was able to call to get the fares...as I had the same problem you did...Sgt. Disney was right and the reservationist at NW confirmed this....their computers are not exactly user friendly with a personality...you have to be crafty & understanding of the system (I even went to the sight & "played around a little to understand it more...and there they were!) the companion fare is not outright listed (as far as I could see) so when you entered lets say like I did a family of 5, I did not recieve a very good fare...but drop it to 4 persons traveling and play with teh dates a bit and BINGO!!! there was the 136PP!!.

When it was time to book the 5th passanger I attempted to get a youth fare, but that would not "fly" either...I was advised that the flight times would change & place my son on another flight...that obviously would not do...so we had to book him at full fare...twice what we paid...lol...an 8yr old costing 2x that of an adult...we are teasing him about being an expensive child...makes him feel important now...lol, but like I said earlier...take the total & divide by 5 & it comes out to $163pp...tax included...cant go wrong...

We are going Sept. 17-27th & have ressie's at the Poly, lagoon view!

Glad I was able to help a little and hope you all saved some presidents...(lord knows we all could use it, cause the mouse has a big appetite & it ain't for cheese...he likes green lettuce!!!...lol)

axel - we are neighbors, and we will be in Disney the same time you are. We will be at the BCV the 21st - 28th for our 5th anniversary. We were originally going to split AKL and GF, but we purchased DVC in February and decided to "go home" instead. Thanks for your post, it helped save us a lot, making our planned trip next May a little easier too!

Hi,

You guys obviously know Northwest and use them quite happily. I am booked to fly London to MCO via Detroit in June and had a wonderful fare for Northwest...but they are getting bad press on the Brit boards and I'm now a bit worried - this is my wedding trip (we are getting married in Clearwater) and I really want it to be okay.

In your opinion are they as good as anyone else???

Think maybe most of us Brits are a bit brainwashed into flying direct with Virgin but they were too expensive for me and I like travelling around America even if it is seeing the inside of airports :)

regards

Karyn

IMHO they are as good as anyone else. You speak to enough people and you will find some people who have had a bad experience on any airline. You will also find others who have had a great experience. It seems that some of the concerns are with the seat assignments on the UK boards. If that is a concern, call a week before your flight and confirm. Many times airlines will substiture aircraft types before flight time and that is usually how seat assignments get changed. Also, if you wait to check in until the very last minute, they may reassign seats. Check in at the counter as soon as you can and then go and do the other things you need to in the airport. I don't fly on NW that often, as they don't fly direct from Chicago anymore, but I did in the past as my father was a Captain with them before he retired.

Karyn,

1st off...congrats on the pending nuptuals....I sincerely hope that you have a lovely wedding and that all goes as planned....

I feel that Sgt Disney is right on this point....I sincerely do not have enough experience with any one specific arilines to say one way or another....and unfortunately with a family of 5 price dictate considerably on which carrier I will go with...

I have flown several in the past....I would prefer Delta into Orlando simply because that is one of their major hubs with the most flights in & out...very convienient...and I have in the past had very good experiences with them...

I am also sure, as Sgt Disney said that if you ask around enough you are bound to find good & bad responses from people...things are simply bound to happen....good and bad.

There is only one airlines that I have made a vow never to fly....even if they are the "only airlines operating"...(Spirit)....theya re offereing a decent fare at good times & a non stop service to boot...however due to a extremely poor treatement over 8 years ago I have not & will never fly them...ever, period...

The wife & I even experienced an extremely bad flight (cabin depressurization, late gate arrival, lost flights, delays on the tarmack...all in one trip) several years ago on a trip to San Diego....they were kind enough to straighten out the matter (with compensation) and we will certainly give them the opportunity to transport us again...as I said things can happen...it is up tot he airlines to make it right once you purchase the ticket....you ar ebasically in their hands.

Again, congrats on the marriage & hope that all goes well!!!

Dan

Thanks Dan, Thanks Cpt Disney

We will check in early to make sure we get the seats we've been allocated and thanku for the congratulations.

Very excited about wedding now (and nervous) but very glad it's going to be in America - only to place to have it :D

We go to DW almost every year and are notorious for booking two months in advance and no sooner. This year when I went to look for air fares out of Houston to Orlando I tried every discount board out there, Orbitz, Price Line etc as well as SWA, American, Delta and Continental. the best I could do was $1100 for a family of four. On a whim I tried NWA and got $180 per person or $720 total. Also this price/ option never came up in any of the discount search engines. We have to go to Memphis and then to Orlando but with a 16 and 12 year old thats not a problem. With the money we saved we are going to rent a car this year for the first time in our seven trips. I'll let you know how the flight is.

I have flown Northwest many times and never had any problem. You can run into delays and such with any airline and since Sept. 11 these things are more common. It isn't just Northwest.

I have always had excellent rates and service with this airline.

I got Syracuse to Orlando round trip this time for 156.00 Per person taxes included!! You just can't do better than that in July!!

Have a wonderful trip and don't worry mate!

Rooth:cool:
