Award booking fees

I just redeemed two US Airways award tickets online for my next trip to MCO. The last time I redeemed award travel online, there wasn't a fee. This time they charged $5.00 per ticket. I emailed them to ask why, but never received a response. I know there are fees if you call, but I thought if you redeemed online through the US Airways site, it was free. I'm not complaining or anything. It's only $10.00 and I still got the award tickets. I'm just curious. Does anyone know if this is something new they started?

They have been doing this for awhile now. The last several award tickets had this charge. Still is a very cheap ticket. :)

The $5 is the security fee. It is charged on all tickets and remitted to the Federal Goverment. The airline has no choice, it is a federal fee.

My Mom and I both had award tickets last December. I wanted to charge the security fee on both our tickets to my credit card, they insisted hers had to be charged to her cc# since her ticket was from a separate dividend miles account.

That is totally bizarre! I book using DH's and DD's miles a lot. What are they going to tell me, to get my 9 yo a credit card? I think you had someone on the line mis-reading the rules. If it ever happens again, get a supervisor.

It could be that she and her mother have two separate addresses, where you and your daughter and husband share the same address, so the booking and payment can be done through the same account. My FIL's frequent flyer account only allows him to redeem for tickets for family members who share the same address/household, Here, the person paying the security fee (i.e. the person purchasing the tickets/redeeming the award) has to be the account holder or a member of the same household.

there was a security fee holiday for a couple of months...

guess the govt was making too much money.....

but now it is back...SFC

We have the same address. The tickets were from separate accounts, mine from my account, hers from her account. It wasn't a big deal, I just had to call back later with her credit card #. We also had problems checking in at the kiosk both ways, they had to issue the boarding passes from behind the counter.
