I read a thread recently about not using the 2nd baggage claim and thought I'd give it a go.

On approaching the conveyor belt after clearing customs, we were "told" to put our bags on the belt as normal

I said I'd prefer to carry the luggage myself if it were possible.
"No problem sir, just park the trolley beside the others before the escalator."

So if you can hand carry your luggage on the shuttle then you can avoid the added delay at terminal B. :thumbsup2

I assume the airport folk are trying to helpful with the luggage but I must admit I always thought it was not optional until now.

nice tip jakey:thumbsup2
i suppose it will be fine until to many people try to pack their bags on the shuttle

Thankfully they are either there waiting or never had to wait more than a few minutes for 2nd bag claim in 14 years but its something to keep in mind if you dont have much luggage.

This year after we cleared immigration (both Manchester and Gatwick came into together so it was packed) we were told after the 1st Baggage claim to proceed straight to the shuttle with our bags, saved a few minutes standing around, hope they continue letting people do this :thumbsup2

If you had got the flight the day before like us, the airport was shut down because of a severe thunderstorm then no bags were being forwarded. I don't know how long we waited, think it must have been a couple of hours at the most.

we did that this time, instead of using the second luggage drop we just took ours onto the shuttle infact alot of people did and it saves so much time

This was why I was keen to try it out. We were caught by a thunderstorm in July as we made our way to Terminal B. We made it OK, luggage didn't and we had to wait ~ 1 hour, a real PITA.

As it's only myself and my partner traveling we tend to go to go one better and go carry on only.

This means no wait at any of the luggage drops, so even if we're last off the plane, we usually breeze past the other passangers waiting for their stuff.

It does take loads of planning though, to get all the essentials in 2 6Kg bags (buying Ts online and having them shipped direct to SSR and wearing coats with some of the heavy items in helps though :) ).

Try doing it with 3 kids under 6, 4 suitcases, a pushcair, a car seat & a couple of lap top bags!
I would love to avoid the 2nd bag drop, but at the moment I dont have a choice.

I always thought it was something you had to do, lol.

I would probally still use it though as we have too much and i don't plan on carrying everything all that way.

Hope they carry on doing this, every second counts of disney time right?? LOL.

We noticed last year that the security check point as you go upstairs off the escalator was gone, couldn't see the point in it anyway really.

Yes we did too in Decemebr as you say could never see the point of it and a few years ago it took a good hour to get through!

Was this on the 24th August...if so we got caught in that one too, apparently we were the last flight to land/take off for quite a while. We were lucky enough to be in premium so our bags were off quickly at the first drop, and we waited about 30mins or so at the second one, but the virgin rep said some of the luggage was still on the flight...which must have taken ages to come through.
