Avoiding I-5 getting to Universal

I was looking at Google Maps trying to find a way to avoid taking Interstate 5 from Anaheim to Universal. It looks like if I head west on 91 then north on 110 it would only take me about 10-15 minutes out of the way. Does anyone know if these are better or less congested highways?

That would take you through downtown LA, probably not the best plan. I guess the question is why you want to avoid the I-5, which is the most direct route.
