I am now seriously considering using public transportation (the public bus). Here is why:
The new bus terminal is located adjacent the Public Library on Edward St. in downtown George Town and serves as the dispatch point for buses to all districts. There are 38 mini-buses operated by 24 licensed operators, serving eight routes. Eight routes serve the island and include service to West Bay (the most frequent service, running every 15 minutes), Bodden Town, East End and North Side (once an hour). A bus also serves stops within George Town. Daily service starts at 6:00am from the depot. The schedule is as follows:
From George Town to:
West Bay - every 15 minutes. Fare is CI$1.50 each way.
6:00am - 11:00pm, Sunday - Thursday.
6:00am - midnight, Friday and Saturday.
Bodden Town - Every 30 minutes. Fare is CI$1.50 each way.
6:00am - 11:00pm, Sunday - Thursday.
6:00am - midnight, Friday and Saturday.
East End and North Side - Every hour. Fare is CI$2 each way.
6:00am - 9:00pm, Sunday - Thursday as well as Saturday.
On Friday, buses will operate until after Midnight.
The new system uses color-coded logos located on the front/rear of buses to identify routes as follows:
Route 1 - (yellow) covers George Town to West Bay and along 7 Mile Beach.
Route 2 - (lime green) also covers George Town to West Bay and along 7 Mile Beach.
Route 3 - (blue) provides service between the depot in George Town and Bodden Town.
Route 4 - (purple) operates between the depot and East End.
Route 5 - (red) goes from the depot to East End and North Side.
Route 6 - (dark green) operates from North Side to West Bay.
Route 7 - (dark green with white numbers) is an inter-district service for George Town.
Route 8 - (orange) runs from the depot to Hutland in North Side.
Buses are identified by new blue license plates. To maintain consistency in fares, each bus must display a fare table outlining standard government-authorized fares. Be sure to stop behind any bus; doors open out in the center of the road. Look for blue license plates on these buses. For questions and schedules, 345/945-5100.
Note prices above in Cayman currency, so the prices to get around are dirt cheap!
About the currence exchange rate:
The CI dollar has a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar of CI $1.00 equals US $1.25 OR US $1.00 equals CI $.80
- Exchange rate -
There is no need for visitors to exchange their US dollars into local currency. Many traders quote their prices in both CI$ and US$ and you can pay in either currency. If you pay in US$, however, be prepared to receive your change in CI$. The US dollar is accepted throughout the islands at a rate of CI 80 cents. However, this can be confusing to visitors: for example, a US$20 note becomes CI $16. Banks DO NOT give a better rate of exchange! Major credit cards (with the exception of the Discover Card) and travellers checks are widely accepted. Canadian dollars and pounds sterling can be exchanged for CI dollars at local banks. The bank rate of exchange is more favourable for traveller's cheques at a rate of CI.82. If you change cash at a bank you will receive CI.80 for US$1.00. Most banks will also honour cash advances on Visa and MasterCard at the rate of CI.82 for each US%1.00 Pounds sterling are not readily accepted by local merchants or restaurants, but may be changed at one of the larger banks on the Island at the current exchange rate, which may vary daily. Coins are not accepted.
