My Norton antivirus subscription just ran out. My computer guy suggested I use AVG antivirus. So I downloaded it and everything seems to be working fine. I did find stuff on the computer that Norton never found.

Anyone else have any experience with AVG????? What is the difference between the free version, which is what I have, and the one you pay for!!!

can you give me the website. My Norton is not working the way it should and I am not happy with it. I have Spybot on there also and the head of the computer dept gave me a program that I downloaded yesterday, it picked up 3 viruses but if you ask me it made my computer worse not better.

I've heard good things and bad things about it. Those comments went like:

I uninstalled AVG and installed Norton/McAfeee/Panda and it found 3 things that the AVG didn't.

But IMHO, you get what you pay for.

With a little common sense and the right settings, you don't even need antivirus software ;)

I use AVG and haven't had a problem. I think the website explains the difference between the free and not free. it seems to update frequently, I take that as a good sign. I guess the true test is that I don't have any viruses.

What does that mean?

AVG didn't work good for me...either did Nortons. Panda did for a while but then that was messed up....Now I am running without one and a bit nervous!!!

Hey Chad!!....what are you talking about...I'd like to know your secret!! ;)

Ok, I hate to burst your bubble, but it isn't that simple. There are MANY email viruses out that do not require you to 'open' them to infect your system. Yeah, if you're on a MAC or not running some version of Outlook you might be ok, but chances are 90% of DIS members are running Windows with Outlook Express. Yeah and if you run Windows XP you have a firewall, but again - of the people that have Windows, a good portion of them do not have XP and therefore do NOT have a firewall.

3 years ago I felt like you - I could get by without Antivirus, but with today's virus writers you don't have a choice. I've had about a dozen viruses stopped by my Norton - and I don't go to questionable sites and know not to open attachments at all.

Please for those of you that can't afford it, at the minimum use AVG - it will save someone a ton of spam mail and will save you the $$$ of having to have the Geek Squad redo your machine because you did get a virus.

I've been running Windows since 3.1 and never had a virus. With todays virus writers, you can still get by ;)

no offense chad but sounds like a horrible game plan to me LOL.

good luck!

:rotfl: I really can't wait until OSX starts being used on x86 hardware this coming year ;) I hope a lot of people adopt it just for the fact of less spyware/virus threads :rotfl: and it will be nice having a dual boot system with OSX/Windows :teeth: No more Linux for me... :hyper:

You sound like me- I am thinking of purchasing a very used computer and just putting Linux on it so that I can learn the OS. I hate Windows. A Mac will probably be my next computer

I am a computer "geek"- I recently got a 200gig external HD because anything smaller seemed like a waste of money. Then again I got a great deal on it (after rebates it came to $110). I use AVG, I always have. I like it and I have never had any problems. Then again I dont use Outlook Express (just regular Outlook) and I never open IE. I use Opera most of the time or Firefox. I love Opera as a browser

Windows 3.1? Well, that explains a lot. Virus writer don't write viruses for 3.1 because nobody uses it. ;)

Windows 3.1 was released in April 1992.

OSX would be good, but alas with OSX, they are pretty sure Apple is going to lock it down to specific hardware signatures so you can't get a copy of OSX and install it on your Dell.

Besides if you're running Linux why aren't you running Wine? There'd be no reason for Windoze 3.1....

I'm not still on 3.1.... :rotfl: I've been dealing with Windows systems since the release of 3.1 :teeth:

I'm pretty computer literate. Once someone cracks it(and someone will), I'll be downloading my copy ;)

Ahhh, I see..... Jeez, that means I go back to 1987... and Windows 2.0. I remember hating it and wanting to use Desqview for everything...

Oh but downloading is illegal! You'd probably never, ever go to demonoid.com. Good thing!

For God Sake people speak English! LOL What is most scary for me is the fact I do not understand most of what you guys are talking about. I wish I knew how write an anti virus that would send itself back to the original source and some how crash the writer's computer! I am NOT computer literate. I have maybe 6 years experience and that is mostly writing reports in Windows!

One of the questions I have for a computer geeks is how do you know a safe site?? I mean I went to a site to look up a particular brand of bathing suit that was very main stream and my homepage got highjacked. I go to very few places on the web for just that reason. I even got a the virus protection that they use to keep our network safe in work (7 schools and hundreds of computers) it did not work. I have a firewall, Norton, Spybot, and Adaware. I am not even opening e mail unless I know who it is from!! What am I doing wrong?

Tell that to my 16 yr old DS. He is forever looking up stuff & just today we have had all sorts of adaware & viruses, all from the one site he looked up.:( Thankfully his elder brother is into IT & was able to get rid of everything.

Our Norton subscription is almost out of date too. What I don't like about Norton is that you have to purchase an updated version or a whole new thing every year.:(
