Avatar in Animal Kingdom a bad idea?

I don't know, does anyone else besides me think that Disney got snowed on the deal to put Avatar in AK and take up all that space: http://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news...cid=ansentap11. I can think of a dozen things they could have done with that space instead of spending five years building a section that may be moot!

By the time the movie finally comes out, it will be 7-8 years since the original. I don't think a lot of kids will even know what it is or be interested in visiting a make-believe land for this theme. I'm not even sure adults will care about it that much.

It seems to have petered out in less than a year from it's release and while it was the highest grossing movie of all time, I think the novelty has worn off.

Also, how will they ever be able to have any characters? The characters are 9 feet tall. I guess a lot of stilt walkers

Anyone agree?

Well it's coming, so I'm kind of past the whole "they shouldn't use Avatar" thing. Like it or not WDW is getting Avatar.

I didn't like the movie, but it WAS beautiful. Maybe it'll at least look good.

From what I understand Avatar sequels are coming out in 2017 http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/james-cameron-says-avatar-sequel-763573. And as far as the size, AK is 500 acres, and Avatar land is being built "outside" of what is essentially the bus loading area and Rainforest Cafe. I'm betting Disney knows what they're getting into with that large of an investment in money and property (they better, anyway. LOL). As far as character meets, I'm interested to see what they do there as well. How tall is Goofy? pushing 7 feet? If anyone can make it happen, I think they can figure out a costume. I'm pretty excited about it. We rarely ever spend more than a few hours at AK. This may make AK a full day to day and a half park...

I've always thought Avatar land was/is a dumb idea. By the time it opens most people will be saying Ava'what??.

I don't get the "kids don't know what it is" argument. First, it's not all about kids, and second, how many kids are acquainted with Song of the South? Doesn't keep Splash Mountain down. It's all on what WDW builds and if it's cool or not.

Is that a real person, though, or a statue? If it's a real person, that's very impressive.

It has always been a puzzlement to my family and I why Disney never finished the original idea for Animal Kingdom -- with one side being fantasy with dragons and unicorns, etc. I remember seeing the original mode way back when and it was a great idea. You can still see the carvings over the entrance ways into the park of some of the original creatures. Wish they had spent the time and money to do that rather than Avatar, but that's JMPO.

I must be one of the few people who actually liked the Avatar movie so I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it in AK.

You are not alone. I don't understand the Avatar thing at all.

First, the movie never seemed all that popular to me. Controversial and talked about alot? Yes. But loved by all? No. And secondly, this is animal kingdom, not outer space kingdom.

I will admit that I'm not an Avatar fan, but I honestly have no issue with an Avatar land, I just don't see how it fits in with animals. I think it would have worked better in Epcot or HS or even at Universal.

Disney has so many great animal movies, I'd rather see more animal themed attractions and shows than aliens. It just seems really out of place to me. I don't think people dislike AK becuase of the theme. I think it is because there aren't that many attractions. Most kids, especially babies and toddlers, really love animals. I would think adding in more animal themed younger rides would really help to pull more families there as there isn't a lot for younger kids to do if they aren't really old enough to sit through shows yet. I don't see Avatarland helping this any.

My family and I liked the movie very much and saw it a couple of times in theaters, but I just never thought it would make a good theme park -- but we shall see.

Actually I think that's a very good idea. I'm surprised no one has come up with that yet considering how popular the Harry Potter parks are.

I liked it too...loved it actually. I never understood the hate at all. I think the world will fit in nicely at AK with its conservation theme.

Unfortunately, they just pushed back the next movie to 2017!

I haven't watched the movie because it didn't look like something that interested me. However, the description of the new area of the park does interest me. Sounds like something unique and new and I can't wait to see how it turns out. As far as kids not knowing about Avatar, I don't think that's going to make a bit of difference if the area done correctly. My kids don't know about a lot of things they see at WDW, but are still interested in the ride: Figment, Malestorm (was a huge hit with my kids, but they aren't troll fans, lol), Song of the South characters, etc.

There was a rumor a couple years back that Uni was trying very hard to get the rights, but nothing ever came of it. I'm betting they're holding on very tight indeed!

One word Splash Mountain as far as relevance.
Also 2 more movies are in the pipeline and the world of pandora has suburb themeing built in. This coming from someone that wasn't a huge fan of the first movie.
