Avatar experience coming to Disneyland

Given that the subs were originally themed to Jules Verne, weren't they part of that whole Vernian futuristic vibe of Tomorrowland?

Besides, they adjoin not only Tomorrowland but also Fantasyland, so Nemo goes fine with that.

The submarines at Disneyland were never themed to Jules Verne/20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - that was only at Magic Kingdom. They are still using the same subs at DL, though they have been repainted a few times, and, of cours,e the Nemo theme was added to teh scenery and narration.

Tomorrowland at Disneyland did indeed have a Verne-inspired phase, but I was way off on the timing: I just did some research and that phase was decades after the Submarine Voyage made its debut.

There was a 20k Leagues 'walk through' back in the very, very early days. I can remember only teeny bits of it since I was really young, but I do remember that the giant squid scared the bejeebers out of me.

Tomorrowland was always a challenge because of how quickly Tomorrow becomes Yesterday. It has tended to be an odd mix of things that included some old (the Carousel of Progress), some current (Autopia, rockets), some futuristic (monorail and maybe the People Mover/shrinking to be inside a snowflake or something?) --not sure about this one because most of the future rides melded into the present or disappeared). Additionally, there were the rides that, as stated above, straddled more than one land, like the subs and the old Skyway buckets.

I think we have to give some leeway to Tomorrowland as far as what "belongs" there. You can't really expect that things that were designed 65-70 years ago would necessarily still be futuristic or relevant, but they may still be beloved experiences.

This is kinda why I love DLP Tomorrowland tbh, ironically it's a bit more timeless with it's steampunk future. At DLR it's more like Spaceland than Tomorrowland. Which is ok, just not very futuristic in the sense it was supposed to be.

Yes, they had that. It was way too long ago for me to remember it, but I am a big 20,000 Leagues fan, so I know all about it. I believe it used actual sets from the movie. They do have a walk-through at Disneyland Paris.

Guess I was mixing that up with Submarine Voyage and misremembered the subs being a tribute to Verne.

My family actually saw the squid and some other 20K League props at the Disney studios; we had a friend who knew Ward Kimball and Mr. Kimball gave us a tour. Even seeing a partial foam squid (the prop version for after it had been hacked in the fight) lying on a table in a workroom was scary! They must have subsequently moved some of the movie's props to DL for the exhibit you mentioned.

You went on a tour of the Walt Disney Studios with Ward Kimball? 😮 WOW! That must have been incredible!

What if they rethemed Star Tours… I know it’s a classic but I feel like they really wouldn’t have to do any major exterior work to do that and minimal interior work. It would be odd to exit the ride into the Star Wars gift shop, but they could returned that as well. Or just have the immediate exit area be Avatar merch and the rest Star Wars.

I noticed MiceAge suggested that they could retheme Soarin' to Avatar. Purely speculative on their part. But they had some reasonable arguments for why that might work. I wonder if it has been too recently re-done for Disney to scrap it, but then again it still would exist in Florida and the California crowd seems to appreciate it most when during it's limited time runs of the original film.

Soarin's too popular, plus you wouldn't get the full experience of Flight of Passage without the seating.

I don’t see them retheming Soarin. I think they are finally getting the clue that they need to add capacity. No sense in closing a popular attraction for another one. They want to EXPAND the parks.

Coming to CA and not DLR. So either it's goodbye to Redwood Creek or that weird show building that's sometimes a store near Monsters Inc is getting a makeover.

I hope it's not Redwood Creek. I love the feel of that area. That building makes sense, especially since it was last used for Marvel. They now have 2 Marvel shops in Avenger's Campus. I don't if it's being used now.
