We are wanting to book for July 4th next summer, our home resort is GF, so we could book now but we are thinking about holding out and trying a different resort. Maybe Beach Club or AK. We are needing a 2 bedroom for 7-10 days and would prefer just a standard room. With everything going on now....do we have any chance at 7 months for a holiday weekend for that long? Should I just book my home resort and then change if others are available?

Personally, I think not. I own at BCV, AND THAT‘s where we will be on 4th of July 2021. I booked it right at 11 months. We like to see MK July 3 fireworks, and I booked BLT for a few days before the 4th, again that was right at 11 months.

I advocate booking your home resort at 11 months and them switching at 7 months if possible. BCV might because some of the 2BRs are lockoffs. AKV is larger and will have a great chance that there will be a 2BR available just because of its sheer size.

Remember that there are no standard villas at BCV. They are all the same, so no points difference with a booking category.

You should book home resort at 11 months and then try to switch. That almost always is the best thing to do, and that is true regardless of any COVID related possibilities, because it assures having a room no matter what exists at 7 months out.

As to probabilities, unknown is impact of Covid. Usually, Kidani savanna view 2BRs are open at that time of year and decent chance for a standard view dedicated 2BR at Kidani. Jambo savanna view has some chance but likley less than 50%, and much lower for standard view. As to BCV, possible, but likely not a good chance, for a dedicated 2BR.

That has a caveat. A potential key is arrival date and thus when your 7-month window begins. Better arrival dates are late June rather than early July, What can happen is that rooms can be open 7 months out from, for example, June 29, but if you wait until 7 months from July 3 to book, those same rooms can be harder to get. (Note, however, if you actually planned for a July 6 or after arrival date, everything should open up again as that begins DVC’s second lowest DVC demand time of the year at WDW, July 6 to 30.)

You’ll get AKL 2 bed savannah I bet bur beach club will be dicey. Book VGF and rent the res for $20 and rent AKL for $18 plus it takes far less points and spend the difference on snacks.

As others have said, I'd recommend booking VGF and trying to change at 7 months.

You could also look into trading your VGF points with a BCV owner to use their booking window.

Or just rent the points from a BCV owner. Then you'd have the option to either rent your VGF points to offset that cost or bank them and use for another trip.

Agree with others - book VGF first and switch later. If you are concerned because you don't want to have to borrow or use more points for VGF, you can make your VGF reservation 1-2 days shorter and then modify at the 7mo mark. I was lucky enough to get AKV value at 7 mo! There seems to be much more movement at 7mo if you are able to jump on things right away.

I would not be renting reservations in 2021, either as an owner or renter - I think there's still too much uncertainty and supply is outstripping demand at this point.

Always book your home resort to secure something then you can just wait an see what is open at the 7 month mark. Especially important if you are talking about a standard room as the cheaper point rooms will always book up quick.
