What size do you bring? There has to be enough room for the signature and I don't want them to be hidden by the frame (I read the trick about taping the egde on another thread :thumbsup2). Are the signature BIG?

Anyways I bought one yesterday but I think it's might be too big :confused3 it's about 11" x 16"

I also found some at the dollar store 8 " x 10"

Should I return the big one?

I had 3 8x10 mats signed by the characters, 7 total (no princesses) and they hold a 5x7 picture. They look great! I had a red one signed with black, a white one signed with red and black and a black one signed with silver. If you want ALL of the characters keep the big one...or keep them both!! Have fun! Enjoy your cruise!

SO are you guys giving just the mat not the whole picture frame to get signed? did you just hand them three different baggies with your room number etc in it and the sharpies with it and then they returned all three to your room? Just wondering if you should just buy a mat ahead of time and then get the frame after the cruise??
THANKS

You tape the edge of the mat with painter's tape or light masking tape (you don't want to ruin the mat when you remove it) about a quarter of an inch all the way around or whatever you need for your frame. The frame hides a portion of the mat when it is inserted, and you don't want the signature in that portion or it too will be hidden. I did an 8 X 10 and had all characters sign it. It came out fine! I placed just the mat and sharpies in a ziplock and put a note inside with what I wanted and what cabin I had. They were great to do it for us! We keep a picture we took on board in the frame and it is such a great memory! We'll probably do another one or pillow cases on the next cruise.

I buy an 11x14 mat with a 5x7 opening. I buy them at Michaels and they are pretty inexpensive. (I buy the 2 pack of frames at Costco and throw away the original mats.) This leaves plenty of room for the signatures.

I followed the advice to use tape (blue painter tape) around the edges the first time we did it, but I had such a hard time getting the tape off that it ended up pulling up the top layer of the mat in several places.

The last two times I did it, I removed the glass from the frame, put the mat in all the way against two sides, and traced a light pencil line on the front of the mat against the edge of the frame. Then I pushed it against the other two sides of the frame and repeated the process. This gave a nice border that you know will never be covered by the frame, and the pencil mark is easily erased. The characters and princesses stayed within the pencil frame without any problems.

Just remember to decide in advance what orientation you want, and put something on the back of the mat that indicates which side is up. That way they know which way to orient the pictures. Most of the character pictures (except for the formal Mickey ones) are 6x8, but will fit in a 5x7 frame nicely if they have the borders. (I especially liked how the Snow White border fits in the frame, since Dopey and some of the animals that peek out from the border into the picture also peek out from under the mat, while the mat hides the rest of the border well.

If you go with a photo CD, then any picture would work since you can always crop them to fit in the opening.

The 11x14 mats are big, and I never find a baggie big enough to hold them, so I put them in a grocery or target bag, and have the markers in a baggie with our name and room number on it. Guest services will attach the request note to the outside of the big bag with the contents noted so they will get back to you.

I just used an 8 x 10 mat and it was really good. They signed closer to the edge so the names can all be seen with the frame I got. You just put it in a bag with the sharpies you want and take it to the desk. On the last day it is returned to you. I also added some candy for the crew members.

My kids love to get autographs in the parks, but I just find the whole thing so silly...I mean, couldn't you just run around to your different neighbors at home and get them to sign "Alice" and "Goofy" and stuff like that--what would be the difference? How do we know that they actually have the person in the costume sign the name on the cruise ship or if they just have the guest services staff all sign them?

I'm not knocking those of you who do this, I just don't get it.

ROFLMAO! :rotfl2:

I picture 3 cast members in the back room swinging back a couple a cold brewski's while writing out the names for 20 or so characters while sitting around in their underwear. :rotfl2:

Seriously, it's all about the magic. Can we just PRETEND that the characters were all dressed in costume and lovingly scripted out each and every frame/book/pillow case? I'm planning to get a frame done because it would be a beautiful border to a DCL photo of the family. Colorful, meaningful, and full of Magic. ;)

Can your neighbors sign exactly like you see the characters signatures on items produced by Disney? The CM's are trained to sign the name just like what you would get on something you purchase.

To me, it's nice to have one item with all the signatures on it that I didn't have to lug around the entire cruise.

We had a photo matte done with all the characters (we even requested Stitch as my DS loves him) and used only red and black markers. It looks great and we have our family photo from the ship in it.

I'm just being sarcastic...I think it's a cute idea and even though my kids are 10 and 11 they still love getting character autographs even though they know it's not really Mickey or Goofy or whoever. I just had the same mental image of the poster above...everyone from guest services sitting around in a circle signing pillowcases and photo frames in different handwriting to match the characters.
:thumbsup2

The beauty if this is you don't have to run around getting the signatures. In my opinion it makes a great cheap souvenir and as the below poster mentionned I am certain your neighbors cannot replicate the characters signatures.

I don't think the actual character signs them. I think many Disney employees can forge ;) the characters signatures.

I said the same thing to DH the other night :lmao: But seriously how cool is it that they do it, for FREE!!! :cool1:

What do you mean charactors in costumes? I refuse to believe they are not real. I am still trying to recover from being told that my parents were the toothfairie. NO ONE will take my Disney magic from me I don't care how old I am. LOL

We have a photo mat with a picture of my granddaugther in it and I love it. Real or not worth the effort and Thank you DCL for sharing the magic with me.

I picture Mickey signing it, passing it off to Minnie, etc. That's the way I want to picture it. So I will ;)

I think it's a nice and inexpensive souvenir. I plan on doing the frame and setting it on our mantel. In fact, I may do two and have one from our honeymoon cruise framed as well!
