Just wanted some opinions on the autofocus assist illuminator when taking pictures on dark rides. During our last trip we were in the HM and I took a picture (no flash of course) but the people in the car in front of us turned around and gave me a look because of the AF assist illuminator. Anyone else have this problem?

I always have mine turned off, at home or at Disney. There should be enough light even on dark rides for the auto focus to work. Just my opinion....

The problem is that any light at all seems so much brighter on the dark rides. I leave the AF assist turned off in a no flash situation like that. It's not really going to be of any help in that kind of situation anyway.

I keep mine off. Especially on the dark rides. Its almost as bad as using the flash.

I actually don't think I even turn it on any longer even when not at Disney.

Good to know, I will keep mine off in the future.

Thanks

I personally think that anything that is distracting to other people trying to enjoy the attraction is inconsiderate. Whether that is you distracting their view, creating unwanted noise, etc I say don't do it.

You're right, the rest of the trip I was taking pictures with my thumb over the light. Needless to say I am new to this whole SLR thing :rolleyes1

I use mine around the house sometimes when I'm taking pictures of my dogs, but mostly don't use it at all. Hope you're enjoying the new SLR! You'll get the hang of it before you know it. THanks so much for checking in with us on this subject.

Good to know that it CAN be turned off. I hate when mine goes off and I hadn't checked the manual yet to see if I could turn it off. Off to check it out now.
