I know we have a thread here on the auto train and I have read through much (not all) of it but at the moment I can't seem to find it.

As a single woman would you travel on the auto train solo? As background I have traveled extensively alone for work and leisure as well as with my family but have never taken a long trip by train or used the auto train.

Any recommendations as for seating - would it be better to book a sleeper car even for one person?

I've traveled alone on the auto train. No problems. I always get a sleeper cause I hope to get some sleep. I have 2 hours to drive home from Lorton.

Thanks Bonnie - I am leaning toward booking a sleeper as well.
Any other advice?

I had a great time on the auto train traveling solo. I booked a roomette and felt perfectly safe. I met interesting people at my meals. And chatted with another solo traveler who I traded books with.
By the way, I am generally an introvert, and I still had fun

Traveling solo this month. Booked a roomette. Just follow your usual travel safety measures. I really enjoy the autotrain and actually get some sleep.

I would definitely get the roomette if traveling solo. We did coach as a couple and those seats would be too cozy if you were snuggled up with a stranger for an entire night. You also have access to the shower in a roomette but not in coach.
Enjoy your trip!
