Last summer I was able to grab the $29 kids fare. Does anyone know if this is a yearly sale, or if there are any other good deals that I can hope for?

I don't know about deals, but I just booked mine for June today. Price dropped by 400 for the four of us. From 1350 to 970. I've been hounding the Amtrak site for a few months, and it finally dropped tonight. Buy early, save money.
My first trip down it cost us 1600! Last year, 950. Next year 970. We've learned to book as early as possible because the price will only go up : )
