Hi All...

I'm so excited! I just booked part one of a trip to Hawaii in August to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.

The trip will primarily be at Aulani, but we are also planning a two day getaway to Molokai.

Here are the broad outlines (and a few details) of the trip.

Sat. 8/2: 6:50am flight out of PHL... change in PHX.. arrive HNL at 2:30PM. Check in at Aulani and just relax/go to sleep.

Sun. 8/3: Plan to spend most of the day at Aulani and shopping for a couple of days of provisions. This will be our adjust to the time change day.

Mon. 8/4: ??? not sure where activities will go in our Oahu portion of the trip - this is an open day at the moment.

Tue. 8/5: Check out of Aulani and head to Pearl Harbor. Tour museum/AZ Memorial. Do other stuff in/around Honolulu. Catch Island Air 5PM flight from HNL to Molokai. Check in at hotel/B&B/Condo (to be determined) on Molokai and have late dinner/see sunset/go to sleep.

Wed. 8/6: Take the Kalaupapa Guided Mule Tour. Spend the late afternoon/evening exploring Molokai a bit (waterfalls, beaches, etc).

Thu. 8/7: Check out of hotel/B&B. Do a snorkeling trip somewhere on Molokai. Need to research this, but my initial impression is that the snorkeling is better on Molokai than Oahu... anyone care to weigh in on that count? Catch the 6PM Island Air flight back to HNL. Drive back to Aulani and check in for part 2 of our Aulani stay.

Fri: 8/8: Definite rest/relaxation day at the resort to recover from Tue/Wed/Thu running around island hopping.

Sat 8/9 through Monday 8/11: Other things on Oahu... I'd like to hike Diamond Head. If we don't do snorkeling on Molokai, we'll probably do that one of these days. By this time, we'll have most of our "must dos" checked off our list - but maybe some other excursions (ATVs at Kualoa)... but from what I read, Island Time may have taken over by this point and that would be okay.

Tue 8/12: Check out of our room, but take advantage of the departure facilities from Aulani. Mostly at the resort for the day. Flight home departs HNL at 10:xxPM... arrives in PHL at about 4:30PM on 8/13... at which point we will go straight home and crash. :)

So that's the current plan. The only thing that really has to be set in stone soon are the Aulani reservations (I have the first three nights booked... plan to book the last 5 nights as soon as I can on January 8th.

Just wondering from Aulani/Hawaii veterans what you all think... any big GOTCHAs in my outline... any must see/must do stuff on Molokai for our second day there?

Should we snorkel while on Molokai or should we do that one day on Oahu?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Ted

P.S. As info... we are Ted (45) and Kathy (44). We're both healthy and in pretty good shape for hiking/walking/bicycling/kayaking/etc, though we could stand to lose more weight. No major medical issues to be worried about... Kathy does have a bit of a twitchy back at times, but we know how to manage that and walking/biking/kayaking do not bother her back.

I will be in weeks 2 and 3 of a marathon training program while we are there, so I am also interested in any info anyone has about good places to go for long runs. Theoretically I'm supposed to run 11 miles on Sunday 8/3 (which is not bad timing for a day that is already planned to be around the resort. I can get out early for a long run and then spend the rest of the day by the pool/beach) Other long runs are 6 miles one day on Molokai and then 6 and 8 miles on the second weekend at Aulani.

The only thing that stood out to me was the day you plan to go to Pearl Harbor. Directly across the street is one of the best swap meets I've been to, and amazing for souvenirs, fresh fruit, etc. got some delicious fresh baked Hawaiian bread, too. That is only on Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays. We were told by several CMs at Aualani that the swap meet is not to be missed, so you may want to pick a different day for PH if that interests you. That way you won't have to drive there twice.
