Aulani ocean view studio questions

Going to Aulani in July and staying in an ocean view studio. Is there a room number that had an awesome view that we should request?

Also, here are some general questions. I'm hoping someone who has stayed in this type of room might know the answers:


Is there a knife for cutting a pineapple?

Any coffee mugs?

Any utensils or paper plates/bowls?

Is there a toaster? I've heard mixed responses on this.

Is dish soap provided?

Is shampoo/conditioner provided?

Can you snorkle off the beach, are there any fish there?

Are tubes provided for lazy river?

When can I get the photo pass? Can I pre purchase or do I have to buy it for $99 at the resort.

For the view, have you looked at the first post in the Aulani Villas and Views thread? It lists the locations of the different room types and has posts of members views so you can get a good idea of where to tell MS you would like to be located.

I am not 100% sure what the studio has vs the 2 bedroom. The two bedroom had the knife, mugs, plates and bowls (not paper) and a toaster. I believe the studio has all but the toaster. Hopefully someone who has stayed in a studio will chime in.
Dish Soap and Shampoo/Conditioner are provided (not daily if you are staying on DVC points)
You can snorkel off the beach. There are not a ton of fish. If you walk past the JW Marriott (soon to be Four Seasons) on the right, there are some nice snorkel spots, but be careful of the current.
Tubes are provided for the lazy river
You can not pre-order photopass for Aulani. You have to purchase it on your last day. Make sure you allow ample time to get any photos added and to purchase the photopass itself (at the gift shop). It can be time consuming.

Aulani studios have paper plates and bowls, and plastic utensils, plus 4 regular coffee cups and 4 glasses. You also have a 12 cup coffeemaker (Mr. Coffee), electric tea kettle, and a toaster, plus a microwave and a small under counter refrigerator in the studio. You will have a cork screw and can opener in the kitchen drawer as well. If you want wine glasses you need to request them from housekeeping.

All DVC rooms have dish soap, shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo and conditioner is only replaced on cleaning days (every four days). If you run out of any paper products, plates, bowls, kleenex, paper towels and toilet paper, housekeeping will bring you more at no charge.

No sharp knives are in the studios.

Many guests snorkel on the other side of the rocks leading into the lagoon. Aulani does not recommend it because the water is rougher. Many actually drive to the north shore and snorkel there. Shark Cove is often recommended by the concierge and my DSIL and her family were quite pleased with that cove. Maps and directions are also provided by the concierge.

Sharks Cove is a great snorkeling location on the North Shore. An even better one (IMO) is located 10 minutes north of Aulani and is called Electric Beach.

If you need a knife for cutting something you should also be able to request that from housekeeping.

We always use studios with DVC and when staying in one anywhere besides WDW (where we have our owners locker) I always pack a medium size paring knife & a pair of scissors in our luggage. While at Aulani we stopped at Target and bought a small pack of paper plates with our groceries because the studios technically only provide 4 each of paper plates & paper bowls & 4 ea of plastic silverware. The paper products there are made to look like bamboo or something. But there is supposed to be a limited supply of them - if there are extras beyond the 4 it is because someone else before you didn't use all of theirs and they're just leftovers. I also bring an assortment of baggies and some extra plastic silverware because they can break easily.

They will provide paper towels, dish liquid, dish sponge & a dish towel + a small assortment of travel size toiltries. If the toiletries have been used up by Trash & Towel day (day #4) they will replenish them. We used the toaster for bagels so I know there is a toaster (it's usually stored in the upper cabinets over the counter).

We walked up the rocks past the Marriott (soon to be Four Seasons) to look for sea turtles to snorkel with. The rocks were very slippery and we were just in our flip flops - I realllllly wished I had brought water shoes for that. Then I discovered later that we could've just walked up the sidewalk out front past the property & cut thru to the beach. Duh. Anyway, there were a couple of turtles over there that were sort of trapped in some fairly shallow pool areas. We did more snorkeling on Maui than on Oahu...
