Hi all.

We are going to Aulani in July and were wondering if you have any recommendations for off-site dining near Aulani (or anywhere else on the island).

Also, have any of you had a loco moco? And if so where i your favorite loco moco resturant.

Thanks, Karl

I ate loco mocos most mornings for breakfast in college because they were $1.50. ;)

In its traditional form its white sticky rice with a hamburger patty and an over-easy egg on top, all smothered in brown gravy. Delicious, but I prefer mine with a gardenburger just because I like the nutty flavor (not a vegetarian). If you see "hamburger steak" on the menu its the same thing only with grilled onions (and often mushrooms) instead of the egg.

Honestly, if you want to try one I'd head down the road a bit to Zippy's in Kapolei (a <5 min drive from Aulani). I think they're about $6-8 there, compared to the $25ish ones we saw at Ama Ama. (Though Ama Ama lunch is delicious, there are pics in my mini-TR in my sig) The best loco mocos are at a restaurant called Da Kitchen, which is in Honolulu and a bit far to drive, but Da Kitchen has (arguably) the best local food in the entire island chain. They make theirs with a fried rice (several kinds of meat in the rice) and you can add chicken katsu, tempura, lots of fantastic variations.

Also try Roy's across the street from Aulani. Their souffle is to die for. ;)

Didn't try the loco moco there, but the Koa Pancake House (think that's what it's called) in Kapolei was YUMMY and cheap! We ate there twice on our last trip. We ate at Alan Wong's downtown and it was YUMMY and expensive!
