We will be in OKW from 04/08/09 to 25/08/09, (Me, DW, DS13 and DD11)

I have read horror stories about how hot and humid it will be :scared1:

Will it really be very tough for four pasty English people to cope with?????

Does anyone have any tips/advice for coping with the heat and humidity please?

Also I've heard that there is a downpour nearly every afternoon, is this the case and does it take long to dry out after one?

Any advice/tips/suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks
Paul

Been a few Augusts now, one year was horrible, torrential rain/thunder storms for about 5-6 hours every single day, more recently they have been hot and dry, last year hardly saw a drop of rain when the rains did come we were on a cruise so missed it.
Yes it gets maga hot but its manageable, everywhere is airconned. Hotter the better for us but some people do struggle with it.

We are also at OKW this August, 6th-22nd before we go on 7 night Disney cruise.

Hi :wave2: This will be our 4th August trip (many people on here have done it far more) With a little planning you will be totally fine,

Yes the weather is hot and very very humid but to get the most from the parks we are always up early and return back to hotel for swim/nap in the heat of the day and go back out again about 6pm ish.

Most important is water! Drink, drink and drink some more! You will lose fluid so quickly in the humid weather and apply high factor sun cream.

The first year we went we had 11 stright days with no rain and it was wonderful, last year we got caught up in tropical storm fay which seemed to last forever. The norm seems to be a thunder storm around 4pm which last 20mins or so and everything drys out really quickly. Its a lovely fresh feeling after a storm, really fresh and the humidity will drop for a while.

Enjoy your planning!

Yes it will be very hot and humid, we go every year sometime in the school holidays because of DW being a school teacher.
You will almost certainly have a lot of rain, last year we had several days of rain when we were there in August because of tropical storm fay that missed Orlando but got the bad weather at the edges of it.
We would not go to Orlando in August if it were not for the DWs work commitments, weather wise it is probably one of the worst times of the year to go. Thats the reason it is low season and Disney offer deals such as free dining, as well as US school kids returning to school around the 15th Aug.
If it is possible it is better to go in May or October when the weather is less humid and less rainfall.
From the UK the flights will probably be cheaper but when you get there the accommodation will probably be more expensive so may work out in cost terms about the same depending on where you stay.

Hi,

August is extremely hot and humid. Although we have been in the summer a few times (it's the natural time for us to go with my teaching job), we would never go then again.
Me and my son just cannot cope with it at all, to the point where it spoils the enjoyment of the holiday.
Everyone has their own tolerance levels, my husband doesn't mind the heat for example, just because I struggle doesn't mean you will.
The big problem for many is that July/August with the school holidays is the obvious time to go, we have changed now to Easter.

Getting to the parks early and trying to visit at cooler times of the day is essential, others have said drink Orlando dry too which is true, make sure you drink water though.

If you get caught in one of the afternoon storms, it's equivelant to getting a soaking on Universal's 'Popeyes Barges' ride - it could take some time for you to dry even in humid conditions.
We always take spare clothing for Joshua each park visit.

We've done 3 August trips (doing our 4th this year.)

Going out in the afternoon is akin to opening the oven door - but if you plan for it you'll be fine. My tips are:-

1. Drink plenty of water continuously.

2. Wear a high factor sun block.

3. Get into air conditioning in the early afternoon (shows, restaurant, cinema).

4. Avoid concrete (parking lots, Epcot, DTD) during the hottest part of the day as it reflects the heat so you get toasted from 2 directions at once.

5. And wear a pale coloured hat (dark ones just absorb the heat).

I'm very fair skinned and have always managed OK.

we got married 2nd sep last year and it was quite hot!! we were in full wedding outfits and morning suits for men. It wasnt unbearable but it was hot.

Thanks for all your advice :) I'll try to work some afternoon down time into my planning!

Thats the best way to cope with it, we go in early morning, stay until about 2pm out for a couple of hours either pool, chill inroom etc then back out for evening meal and back in park after when its cooled down.

We too have to go in the summer holidays & we have 3 boys under 8. Other than drinking lots of water we also try to get to each park as early as possible. We tend to leave at 2pm (ish) & go & have a swim or skip lunch & have an early dinner.
We tend not to let our kids drink pop, but in the sun we allow them to have Sprite or Mountain Dew to make sure the blood sugar is up. Not loads, share a bottle between all of us which also feels like a treat to the kids.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. The exciement is reaching fever pitch and we still have 6 months to go!!!!! lol

Same in our house!!!

We are also going in august and I have been a bit worried about the weather, too. Not so much the heat, though, but the rain. My friends were there for 2 weeks last august and the second week it poured everyday! Her husband moaned all the time (he's a misery anyway!) and it really ruined their stay. Now, before anyone says anything, I wouldn't let the rain bother me THAT much, as there are plenty of things to do to keep out of the rain, but even so, I am just hoping for the majority of the 2 weeks to be dry!!!
