Aug or Sep? When is HM closed for Nightmare overlay?

Hi friends!

We're looking at going to DL in either the 2nd week in August before school starts, or the week after Labor Day. I want to go in August so we don't have to pull my older daughter out of school. DH wants to go in Sep due to the lower crowd forecast. But I'm worried a few of the rides (like Haunted Mansion) will be closed for their Halloween overlay - when does it close??

It will go down some time in August, maybe around the third week or so. It will definitely be down in early September. The only other ride to go down for a Halloween overlay installation is SM. That probably will happen the second week of September and only takes a few days. Both HMH and SMGG will be up and running by the start of Halloween Time.

It will be closed by the last week of August. And reopen by early/mid-September.

After Labor Day any ride could close for a refurb. Rides that have had one this year likely wouldn't close, but we won't know which ones until about 3 week out. I wouldn't assume there will be a lower crowd forecast. Last year Disney bridged the time between Labor Day and Halloween with an AP Days promotion. Plus in August you'll have longer hours and weekday nighttime shows to offset potentially higher crowds.

I researched this specific topic quite a bit for my trip in 2015. According to the past years, it seems to always close exactly two weeks before Labor Day, and reopens around a week after Labor Day (last year, it was the Friday after Labor Day, so four days).

My next vacation to Disneyland begins on the 3rd of September until the 9th. I was worried about the Haunted Mansion closing. It's a trade off for me, though since I will get to spend my 70th birthday at Disneyland.

If it's like last year, you may be able to ride it on your last day or two.
