Can anyone recommend a site for downloading audio books? I am willing to pay per book if I have to but I don't want a monthly charge.

My online library service has books I can download "listen to for two weeks" but it doesn't work with ipod. Ipod won't work with them. Overdrive media is willing but ipod isn't.

TIA

Audible.com is where I go for my audiobooks. I think I have the 'gold' membership where for $21 per month you get 2 credits (2 books) that you download to your computer and then you can put them on your i-pod. They will download directly to i-tunes if you want. It is very easy to use, and IMHO a very good deal. You can also get the daily WallStreet Journal, or the Daily New York Times for no extra charge.

check it out and see what you think. There is also the option of paying per book, but the prices are way better if you are a member of some sort.

not the most popular answer but try your local libary, if they have them on cd you can put then on your ipod useing itunes.

My "local" library is at least 30 min. away. I hardly ever get up there. I belong to an online library (Northern Waters Library) I wonder if I can get the books on cd's that way and then transfer them. I will have to check.

I was so disappointed with the audio books not working on the ipod. I spent all day yesterday trying to get them to work only to find out today ipod won't work with them.

Audible.com is great. Even though you pay monthly, it's a good deal. You can pay $22 a month for 2 credits..books can run up to $20-50 each and are usually only 1 credit. Although some more popular and longer books can be 2 credits. You can also roll the credits over from month to month so you don't lose credits if you don't buy any books that month. They do have the option for paying per book, but it can get rather expensive.

Another option is your library. You can check out the book on CD and then rip it to itunes. It shows up as a music file on the ipod, and you have many more tracks..but it still works.

Another option is onthegobooks or booksfree.com. Think Netflix for audio books. They deliver it to your house and you send it back when you're done postage paid. I prefer booksfree because they send the entire book at once, where onthegobooks breaks larger books up into sections.

recorded books.com is yet another option. They have the entire Outlander series there (AWESOME series) - Audible only has the first 3 unabridged.

Again, these would need to be ripped to itunes.

I've been listening to books on my ipod/mp3 players for at least the last 3 years and I love it!

ps..you've GOT to listen to Harry Potter. Jim Dale is PHENOMENAL!

Most books on Audible also will not play on an ipod.

However, for the record, it's not because Apple/ipod isn't willing. It's the publishers that will only let the books play on non-ipod mp3 players because they want a specific anti-piracy software used.

I don't believe this is correct. According to their website, Audible is compatible with ALL ipods. There's also a entire section in the FAQs devoted to "everything ipod an itunes". Just go to the website and click on device center. Every book I have from Audible plays on my ipod (and I have dozens) There's a special plug-in you download for itunes that enables you to use it. You just need to make sure that you download the correct format of the book which BTW, is format 4 (they have 4-5 different formats to choose from).

Hopefully this won't post 3 times again! LOL..it wouldn't even let me go back and edit my posts to delete the text..

I solved my issue. I found an old mp3 Creative Zen player and was able to down load from my online library for free. :cool1: Now I have to invest in AAA batteries;)

Thanks everyone!!

I have been a big fan of podiobooks.com for over a year now. These are FREE audio books in numerous genres. It costs nothing to subscribe, and you are not charged per book. That said, if you enjoy a book... there is a link on each book's page for you to make a donation to Podiobooks via Paypal. The author gets more than half of your contribution. You decide if a book is worth a contribution and just how much. You can even set up a feed within iTunes to get chapters delivered to you on a weekly basis.

For horror fans, check out Scott Sigler on Podiobooks - who has several real books available via Amazon. Fans of Sci Fi might enjoy JC Hutchins 7th Son trilogy of novels. And Mur Lafferty is a writer out of North Carolina who writes in a number of styles from essay to fantasy. They all make their books available for free, in the hopes that you will enjoy them and see some "value" in them. But again, that's all up to you.

We had looked at audible over the holidays for my mother in law, so it may just be the particular books we were looking at for her ipod weren't in the right format.

My husband buys them new(sometimes used) on ebay and loads them onto itunes. He then relists them on ebay. I guess he ends up paying 10 bucks per title this way...Just something else to think about. We may have to try this website, though...that sounds like less of a hastle!:)

This is not true. Audible has software that downloads any of their offerings to i-tunes.
You can also use it for other MP3 players, so they will also download in different formats.

Perhaps you could double check your settings to make sure you have the i-tunes option checked?

edited to add: Oh! You are right. There was one book -once- that I could not download. It was short, but I can't remember what it was. Anyway, it is not a widespread issue. I have only had it happen once, and as I recall it was a really old recording of something. If you have any trouble with audible, just call them. :)

Thank you. I will check this also. My first choice is to use the ipod (no batteries).
