Which one would you pick? What is the best value?

Kodak 3.1MP Easy Share CX6330 $197.73
Minolta 3.2 DiMAGE xt w/Bonus 128 memory card $278
Canon 3.2MP Power Shot A300 $184.94
Casio 4MP QV-R40 $264.94
Kodak DX3900 3.1MP $189.99
Kodak CX6340 3.3MP $259.90
Olympus Stylus 300 3.2MP $279.99
Sony CyberShot 3.2MP Digital Zoom $199.99
Fujifile Finepix 3.2MP Dig. Zoom $199.99

Any other suggestions?

I would pick the Canon PowerShot. Also Nikon is offering a $200 rebate on some of their cameras...their Coolpix cameras are awesome for newbies. Good luck!

Another vote for the Canon. We've had excellent luck with our Powershot.

I would also go with a Canon, but that not model. It has NO optical zoom, only digital.

How about the A70 with 3.2 MP and 3x optical zoom.

Also the new A80 with 4 MPis getting awesome reviews.

herc.

I tend to buy Kodaks, but my next digital camera will have the highest optical zoom I can afford.

I should have added for the OP that we've got the A70. We're mighty pleased.

The A80 makes me wish I'd have waited. But the pain of technology is whatever you buy today, they'll have something better and cheaper next week.

I'm getting the Canon G3 for Christmas.....I think! ;)

I have the Canon .. it love it....it takes much better pic than I do:wave2:

Nikon Coolpix 3100 3.2 meg pix, $259

What about remanufactured ones? I found a Nikon Coolpix 5000 for $459.99 from MP Superstore. Does anyone know if the rebate would apply to a remanufactured camera? The rebate of this is $200. Probably not...sounds too good to be true.

It has this written:

"This item has been REMANUFACTURED. It is in NEW condition and carries a manufacturer’s warranty.
All original supplied accessories included."

I'm torn here. I need to buy a new camera but just can't decide between 35mm or digital. I'm not terrible technologically competent. I want the easiest thing there is. But, my family is screaming at me to join the modern world!!! I don't think I would be sending a lot of photos over the internet but I do like the idea of storing my photos on dvd's instead of a huge pile of paper in a drawer!!! Any advice?? Thanks.

Does anyone know if refurbished/reconditioned camera are any good and if they qualify for manufacturer rebates?

Doris,

I think you'll find the answer to both these questions differs from manuafacturer to manufacturer. Usually, refurbs have a "limited warranty." It would depend completely on who you're buying from.

And in my experience, I'd be real careful buying a refurb unless purchased A) from the original manufacturer; or B) from a reputable dealer (big box places like Circuit City are a good bet). These places tend to have better warranties, too.

What I'd avoid: mail order refurbs. I've had some major bad experiences with this. I'd be interested if anyone else concurs, but that's my opinion.

The first digital I got was a refurbished (reconditioned) Kodak. It worked perfectly when I got it a little over 2 years ago and still does today, I just sold it to my brother.

Some people say it's a plus to buy a refurbished model because it's been checked over double time and anything they missed the first time that was causing the problem is now fixed and working how it should have been the first time! ;)

Click here to see the rebate form for the Nikon.

1) The $200 was only for one model, most were $50.

2) It says 'purchase a new' Nikon. Based on that, I would assume reman cameras are not included.

Anyway, I have a Canon G3 and I love it. It's a little bulkier than the others but is chock full of features you prolly may not use. I agree with another poster in that you should get as much optical zoom as you can afford - it's worth it.

check this camera out..Minolta Dimage Z1 it's 399 ....according to a ritz associate..it has the best white balance of any digital they sell. I played with one Saturday..I worked for Ritz years ago..I would pay the extra to buy from them and also check out their ESP..it is well worth the price....I had a customer that ran over his brand new 500 dollar camera with his pick up truck...he was so upset,,I told him to calm down and bring the pieces in ..along with his copy of the esp...because he paid for this extra protection, he walked out of the store with a brand new camera..unless they've changed the policy it covers damage of any kind,,except for nuclear war, fire, and brackish water....they might have added acts of terrorism now.....if you wnat some extra advice on the ESP,,PM me
