I hate to ask one of *these* questions, but this is our first non-Carribbean/Bahamian cruise. Do people dress similarly for dinner on a Norwegian Fjords cruise (or Alaska or any northern climate) as they do for more tropical cruises? Or would a pastel color linen shirt/white pants combo for cruise casual attire, for instance, be too "out-of-context" for this environment?

Your linen shirt/white pants sound fine. We did Norway/Iceland last year and saw a range of clothes, although we did not see anyone extremely casual at dinners at night -maybe we just didn't notice. Lots of people dressed nicely to very nicely on semi formal and formal nights.

We were on the B2B Magic Norwegian fjords, Norway/Iceland/Scotland cruises last year and nothing will look out of place. There was a whole range of dress styles at dinner from fancy to very, very casual. In fact, on formal night on the Norway/Iceland/Scotland cruise there were people at dinner in pajama pants and t-shirts! My only advice would be to bring sweaters, wraps, etc. as it can get very chilly there (if you plan to go outside, of course). I brought a few dresses, but it was just too darn chilly, so I started wearing leggings, flats and nice sweaters or wraps to dinner.

I did Northern Europe last year (so I bit different but similar weather) and I found that people dressed in less shorts but otherwise very much the same. I know on casual nights at dinner we wore dark jeans and blouses with wraps or sweaters and on formal and semi formal nights we upgraded to dress pants and even fancier blouses with wraps or sweaters. I did generally find the dining room cold but found the overall temperature on the ship to be good. If you step outside on deck you may want closed toe shoes (or not if you're me) so your feet don't get cold but beyond that your cruise casual should be fine. It is still summer even if it doesn't quite feel like it.

I would agree.. though except for us.. We had late dining on our cruise and being so light out we lost track of time. Forgot what night it was and at almost 8:45pm or 9am we raced to dinner in what ever we were wearing (I think capris or jeans) and stopped dead in our tracks.. It was semi formal night and we forgot to even check our online ap or navigator. Everyone was dressed very nice on Semi Formal night (except for us) My Husband who was there looked at us funny as he was in his suit and tie. I guess you can say we had such a good time on that cruise.
