Are marshmallows and jr mints safe? My daughter is bringing in cupcakes to school for her birthday tomorrow and we are decorating them like polar bears:

I realize I cannot use choc chips so I am making due with marshmallows and jr mints if they are safe.

I have a call into the peanut allergy kid's mom but she hasn't gotten back to me yet.

Here are the cupcakes (not using coconut, though):

Should be. My daughter eats them. The Jr. Mints could have the "made on equipment that also processes" problem, but the packaging should tell you that. Your best bet of course is to wait for the parent to call you back so you know how severe the allergy is and whether the processing issue may be a problem.

Thanks. The Jr Mints don't say anything on the box. I'll wait to decorate hers. Are all choc chips unsafe for peanut allergies?

No. Just the ones that contain peanut oil, coconut oil or are produced in a plant that uses those oils. Not all do.

Guittard has peanut allergy safe ones. They are big chips. Can usually find them at Costco, health food stores.

Hershey's are also safe.

So are Chipits. (harder to find), and Guirradalli's (sp?)...little more expensive.

Stay away from Nestle Tollhouse Chips, though. Made in a plant that processes. (All Nestle Chips for that matter.)

This is great! Thank you!

Also need to stay away from chips/kisses that have "swirls". With Hershey, the majority of their products are safe. However, the lighter swirls have been known to have coconut oil in them.

 I alway look for sunflower oil, too. Legumes have the same reaction on me...and the sunflower oil (that is suddenly so popular the past couple years:guilty: ) does me the same way as my peanut allergy...throat starts closing & asthma attack.
Pesky sunflower oil is harder to avoid than the peanut/coconut stuff.

I was hoping Ghiradelli was okay but my package says it is made it is made in a facility that uses peanuts and tree nuts.

They changed practices last year on how they clean their equipment. Some bags no longer have the warning-some do. When in doubt-I don't use it.

The asthma attack brought on by the allergies tends to be worse & with a lot of kids no longer being allowed to have their rescue inhalers handy ( )...I wouldn't risk it.

I know it is a "pain" to work around but it is a serious reaction that can be avoided. KWIM? If have the jr. mints-I'd go with them. Will still look just as cute.

I'm going to print out the list for my own PA DS. Thanks for posting it!

OP: It's so thoughtful of you to be thinking about the other child. Not everyone is so kind.:thumbsup2

I have to tell you I work for a chocolate company (NOT Ghiradelli) and we put that disclaimer on everything we make even though we do not use peanuts or tree nuts in anything we make just to cover ourselves from any lawsuit etc. I would never chance anything that says it with a peanut allergy kid though from anyplace that has that on the wrapper but I know for a fact ours is safe.

First of all, it is AWESOME that you took the time to post and that you care so much that the treats are safe.

That being said, I would not let my child eat them. It is not uncommon for someone to have a reaction from a baked good that someone thought was safe because there was some peanut/tree nut residue on the pan or utensil or somewhere along the way. A well known Johns Hopkins university allergist - with a severe peanut allergy himself - almost died from eating some cookies made by a co-worker who told him they were peanut free. They determined that there must have been some residue on the baking pan from a previous batch of peanut butter cookies.

I am always deeply touched when someone goes to the trouble of trying to make something safe for my child to eat, but it is so hard to control all the sources of peanut/nut contamination unless you are used to it. I've had to offend people by refusing to let William eat things - I've often found that one of the ingredients (usually like a chocolate chip or sprinkles) are may contains.

Kudos to you though!

Hey..like the PP's I want to say thank you for taking the time to check.
My ds-11 has peanut allergies. Our Cub Scout leader called me this morning to see if "nutter butter" cookies were okay to bring to the meeting this Sunday night.
I said, "Sure, Sean won't touch anything that I have not made."
I think you and she are very thoughtful, again thank you for asking!
Lisa

That is so true! Folks get offended when I say that Aidan can't have them even though they're "safe." We don't allow any baked goods not from home.
