Just thought I would pass on this info: I read alot about Vistana in here. Be aware that vistana no longer offers non-smoking accomadations. ALL rooms are smoking. If you request a non-smoking room they will put an air purifier in the room for you before you check in. This may be suitable for some, but my son has reactive airway disease and can get very ill from smoke. My pediatrician said that the air purifier is not sufficient. I had a very difficult time finding non-smoking accomadations through RCI. For some this may be an important consideration. I don't want to my DS to spend his vacation on a breathing machine.

My DH is extremely asthmatic. For the past 14 years he has gone to the ER 2-3 times per day for special treatments. We explained this to Vistana Villages and they assured us about their air purifications system. All I can say is that our unit was incredibly pure smelling. We were shocked and must assume that they have an industrial strength purifier of some sort. We have had much worse problems in hotels with mildewy bathroom, etc. Vistana Villages are kept immaculately clean! I can't promise that everyone will have the same results as us, but I can offer some assurance based on our very positive experience.

Luckily, for us, medical reasons are not at the root of our desire for a non-smoking unit. I feel for those of you who have to deal with that. We just hate the smell and filth that smoking brings with it. Our experience at VV was very positive. We could not detect any hint of "the big stink" in our unit. I, of course, can't speak to how it could affect those with a medical problem with breathing, etc.

Our friends went to V V in 2001 one week before us and they almost had to use a smoking suite. Their son is highly sensitive.
It makes a huge difference not to have that nicotine clinging to everything.
Try cleaning the windows after someone has smoked for a week and they are yellow. That yellow doesn't get cleaned from the furniture and walls.

Last year when we went to Westgate Vacation Villas, they had changed all units to non-smoking.

It is kind of sad when Westgate is ahead of you in the trendsetting arena. I wish all units at the DVC were non-smoking but that would not be fair to folks who purchased a timeshare with the understanding that both smoking and non-smoking units would be available. It seems like Westgate would have the same issue.

I think it is actually against the law not to provide non smoking accomodations in a hotel or in a restaurant of a certain size. I would check into it, and then report them to the Better Business Bureau. I know that I would NEVER stay anywhere that couldn't guarantee me a non smoking room... air purifiers just don't cut it!

The DVC resorts can't "guarantee" anyone a non-smoking villa. With the large number of n/s to smoking, chances are your request will be honored but if you arrived during an extremely busy time at OKW with the current testing of first come, first served one might get left without a non-smoking room that had been requested. If medical reasons were noted on your reservation then that might change what you would wind up with but who knows. My understanding if what was reported is correct, VV does not have non-smoking rooms anymore, all smoking optional. I think that this is a terrible practice.

Just wondering...Does this apply to Vistana Resort, too, or just the villages. We are thinking of trying to get Vistana Resort through skyauction and cancel our HIFS, if we can, but this might change our decision. Thanks.

It's not illegal to have NO Smoking facilities.
Here in Oregon All Work places are NO Smoking [smokers have to go outside to smoke]and last year we voted and pass the NO Smoking in Restaurants bill. Only public place that is still Smoking ares are bars. Although 1 county is testing No Smoking Bars.

I don't know about Fl. laws about having non smoking rooms but under the ADA they have to have some because of medical conditions. some one needs to push this with them.

V V is a timeshare, I don't know if that matters, but, they are privately owned.
I am not sure that hotels have to provide non smoking or smoking, I believe if you don't like the policies, you don't have to stay there.
Personally, I think both should be offered.
